Going to get your haircut is a nice treat, but unfortunately this cost can add up for those who are sticking to a budget. Fortunately, there are solutions for those who are curious about going DIY with their locks.

Joanna Simpson, a 53 year old freelance hairdresser from Wiltshire who posts as hairdresser_joanna and jo_simps on Instagram and @joannashairandbeauty on Facebook, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘If you want to begin cutting your own hair at home, it’s important not to use household products and get the right tools. A good all-purpose kit will feature hairdressing scissors, clippers, a good shampoo and conditioner, leave-in serum, a tangle teezer and a comb. Plus, if you get the lowest cost versions of each product, you will spend under £50. Here are my top tips for DIY haircuts done properly on a budget.’

Save £130 On Hairdressing Scissors - Choose Wahl Bundle For £15 In Argos

For the best quality cut, it’s always best to use professional hairdressing scissors. The good news is that you don’t have to invest too much for such a product - Wahl is a brand which has good prices, and you can get scissors in Boots or go for this £15 kit from Argos. One high-end option is Joewell, and if you go on trade sites like CoolBlades they will be as much as £183. It’s worth shopping around if you want to splurge, as if you go directly to their website the lowest price is £150. Generally speaking it’s always worth comparing prices as clearly they will vary a lot from place to place!

Never Cut Your Own Hair If It’s Short - Bald Patches Can’t Be Covered Up!

Short styled hair should definitely be left to the professionals. If you have short hair, never try to cut it yourself. This is because there is no way to cover up any mistakes or bald patches. Of course, nobody can stop you if you are determined to give it a go, but the best option is to see if a friend or family member can help you out. They will be able to get the areas you will struggle to access by yourself and you will minimise the risk of an uneven cut. For those using clippers, keep it safe by starting out with the largest attachment.

Shop Smartly For Clippers - Save £260 With £8.50 Wahl Bargain

There are plenty of parents out there who may give their kids a quick buzz cut, but as with hairdressing scissors, it’s best to avoid products you have lying around the house which are intended for other purposes and invest in a bit of kit. This doesn’t have to break the bank, though - a good budget-friendly option is the Wahl Pocket Pro Trimmer. It’s just £8.50 and comes with a 6 position adjustable comb attachments, plus 2 close trim attachments and clipper oil. Clippers can easily cost as much as £270 so go for the best you can afford if you’re committing to doing regular haircuts at home.

Prepare Your Hair - Use Good Shampoo, Conditioner & Leave-In Serum

I find it best to trim your own hair when it is freshly washed and dried so it’s soft and easy to comb through. A good shampoo and conditioner is important and a leave-in serum will help if your hair is dehydrated. I typically use Tigi shampoo and conditioner, which is around £10 a bottle - although you can often find bundle packs for just under £15. For a cheaper buy, I sometimes go for Elvive, as this can be £4 a bottle and save you up to £12. Sometimes you can save even more; for example Boots can have sales on for this brand. At the moment the serum I personally use and love is the Aussie Blonde Hydration Lightweight Hair Oil, which is £10 on average. For other hair types, it’s always worth looking out for sales. Superdrug currently has a sale on select Herbal Essences products, so their Scalp & Hair Oil with aloe and avocado oil is £2.99 reduced from £5.99 at the moment.

Use A Tangle Teezer For Brushing Out Knots - Grab One For £5 From TK Maxx

All you need to get your hair ready after washing is a good brush that suits your hair type and a comb. My favourite brush is the Tangle Teezer - they are very good for brushing out those pesky knots whilst keeping things gentle on your hair! You can get them really cheaply these days; for example, I saw some on sale for £5 in TK Maxx the other week. Once you are ready to begin, work through the hair slowly and take a small section at a time. Comb the chosen section through before you start trimming. Clip the rest of your hair back for easier access.

Keep It To A Trim - Don’t Cut More Than Half An Inch

When it comes to cutting your own hair, I would only recommend you do so if it’s medium to long with layers. Even then, it should only be a little trim. Never try to restyle it yourself. I would only recommend trimming a maximum of about half an inch - this way if you make a mistake you can go back over it to even it up. Don’t go overboard trying to fix it, though, as once you go too far there’s no going back. Always cut less than you want to take off and work your way up. Slow and steady wins the race!
