As the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
But members of the money-saving Facebook community Latest Deals, Extreme Couponing & Bargains Group have proved that that’s not true at all.
Members have gathered to share their most memorable competition wins, which vary from brand new cars and fancy holidays to baby products worth £2,500 - and even cold hard cash.
Competitions can take a couple of seconds to enter and require as little effort as entering in your email address or tagging a friend on social media - but they can elicit incredible results, as members of the Facebook group have proven.
One member, Rachel, commented: "I won a night in a London hotel, a mani-pedi at Harrods, dinner at a five-star restaurant at Le Caprice restaurant in London, a £500 Westfield voucher and my picture on a billboard for the day! This was all one prize - it was a great weekend.”
Lauren-Ashley also got treated like a queen for the day after winning a competition. She revealed: "My mum won a voucher from Bicester Village. They sent a limo and champagne to pick us up for a four-hour drive each way. They gave us lunch in a restaurant, a voucher plus loads of discount vouchers, and treated us like royalty all day!”
Charlotte added: “I won an overnight trip to Newcastle on the train first class including a stay in a Hilton with an evening meal, breakfast and VIP Disney on Ice tickets for me, my husband and our two daughters. Our girls had the chance to go on the ice with the characters. It was amazing!"
Some members even got to visit far-flung countries thanks to their competition luck. Fiona shared: “I won the best holiday ever to Canada back in 2015 for 10 nights. It included all flights, car hire, three different Fairmont hotels, all meals, and activities including a helicopter flight over the Rockies, white water rafting, horse riding, bike hire and a glacier adventure. It was amazing!”
Vicki added: “I won a holiday to Santorini, plus we got upgraded to a private villa with a swimming pool when we arrived!”
Shaun said he won a “holiday in Athens at an amazing boutique hotel”, while Jacky won “a week in Vegas” and Nina won an “all-inclusive holiday to EuroDisney for a family of four”.
Gail added: “I won trip to New York and stayed in a 5* hotel in Times Square. They also gave us £500 spending money. We thought it was a joke but when the £500 cheque arrived we knew it was real!”
Ann revealed: “I won tickets to the Grammy awards in LA, including business class flights and the hotel all paid for! We even went to the after show party with a free bar and a vodka room!"
Another member, Sheree, spent just 99p on a raffle on a Facebook group, and won a brand new car worth £9,000. She said: “I couldn’t believe it and still can’t - I was extremely lucky for a change, as I’ve never won anything before!”
Some members won products just when they needed them most. Angela won a £10,000 wedding, while Kerry won a wedding cake worth £750.
Rebekah commented: "I won a baby bundle years ago when I was expecting my second child. It was a Chicco brand stroller, bouncer and highchair. It was an absolute godsend.”
Jessie said: "I won £1,000 in Barclay freedom points about six years ago, it was perfect as at the time our son was a baby so we bought lots of baby supplies with it from Amazon. My favourite thing I got with the winnings though was a steam mop!"
Helen added: “I won £2,500 worth of baby products - I literally filled in the form whilst waiting for my appointment and had an email to say I’d won!”
Another new parent sadly missed out on a thousand pounds. Julie revealed: "I once won £1,000 at the bottom of a Flora tub. I threw it in the bin and didn’t realise until I got to the bottom of the next tub I’d actually won, as I noticed there was no print £1,000 on the bottom. At a time I was a single parent with a new baby so I really could have done with the extra cash!”
Some members were fortunate enough to win incredible gadgets, vouchers or even cold hard cash.
Samantha revealed: “I won a 100-inch TV worth £5,000 last year and £5,000 in Thomas Cook vouchers!"
Rebecca added: "I've won £1,000 in Amazon vouchers, £1,000 cash, five iPads, and lots of other things. I’m very fortunate!”
Rob said: “I got a £1,500 voucher for lastminute.com holidays. I've had a few other wins too over the years, such as a tech bundle worth over £1,000.”
Ayse commented: “I got a £1,000 Tesco card for leaving a review about a coat I purchased”, while Joan added: "My daughter won £2,000 worth of gadgets: she thought it was a con but six weeks later she had a MacBook Pro, iPhone XS and an iPad Air mini!”
Lastly, one shopper won the golden ticket: not having to worry about food shopping for a year. Jodie wrote: "My partner recently won a year's worth of shopping in the form of a £400 Morrisons gift card every month for a year. We’ve also won a PS5, a few PS4s, a few TVs and loads of other tech prizes!”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, and pictured here with some of his own winnings, comments: “I have absolutely loved reading every single comment on the competition thread on the Latest Deals, Extreme Couponing & Bargains Group.
“From cash to TVs, holidays to cars, it’s hard to believe you can get such amazing prizes with just a quick entry!
“Competitions really are a numbers game, so it’s logical that the more you enter, the more you have a chance of winning!
“If you spend ten minutes a day while on the bus or while watching TV entering competitions, you’ll hopefully be well on your way to winning very soon.
“Often, these competitions require nothing more than just entering your email address or tagging a friend.
“On the occasion they require something more - such as you writing a poem, taking a picture or coming up with a joke - you have even more of a chance of winning, as chances are, most people won’t take the time and effort to come up with something unique!"
