Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced the closure of its department stores in Aberdeen, Peterborough, and Sunderland, as part of its ongoing strategy to reshape its retail footprint.
The Peterborough store in Queensgate Shopping Centre is set to close in April, while the Aberdeen store on St Nicholas Street will shut its doors in 2025. The company has assured that there will be no loss of permanent jobs due to this closure, as they'll be expanding their nearby Union Square store.
M&S is also considering closing their High Street West store in Sunderland. But it's not all bad news for shoppers, as M&S is set to open a new store in Sunderland's Washington Galleries area.
James Flanders at The Sun reported that M&S is not only closing certain stores but also planning new openings and expansions. The retailer's ongoing strategy includes operating 180 full-line and 400 food halls over the next five years. Significant investments are being made in new stores and the expansion of existing ones, alongside enhancing their digital offerings with the rollout of click-and-collect services.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "The M&S store closures reflect a broader trend in retail where brands are adapting to changing consumer habits. The focus on expanding food halls and enhancing digital services indicates a strategic shift towards a more integrated and modern shopping experience."
