Netflix Scraps £6.99 Basic Plan: What are the New Options for Subscribers?

Netflix prices change again! Basic axed and sharing clampdown
  • Netflix discontinues its Basic plan priced at £6.99/month, leaving three remaining tiers.
  • The options include a Standard plan with ads at £4.99/month, a Standard plan without ads at £10.99/month, and a Premium plan at £15.99/month.
  • The Standard plan with ads offers two streams and 1080 HD quality, making it a cost-effective choice.
  • The Premium plan provides 4K UHD and four streams, but may not be worth the higher price for most viewers.
  • An Extra Member option lets one or two additional members join an existing Standard or Premium plan for £4.99 each, sharing their benefits.

Andy Clever Cash, a popular YouTube channel known for providing money-saving tips and blogger at Be Clever With Your Cash, recently released a video discussing the changes in Netflix's pricing structure. The video highlights the removal of the "basic plan" and the introduction of new options for customers. The YouTuber breaks down the different tiers and analyzes which one offers the best value for money.

The basic plan, which used to cost £6.99 per month, has been scrapped by Netflix. This plan allowed users to stream on one device at a time and had lower picture quality compared to other plans. Despite its limitations, the basic plan was popular among users due to its affordability. However, it is no longer available for new customers, and existing customers cannot switch to it if they are already subscribed.

Netflix now offers three tiers: a cheaper option with adverts for £4.99, the standard plan at £10.99, and the premium plan at £15.99. The standard plan allows for two simultaneous streams and offers 1080 HD picture quality. The premium plan includes 4K ultra high definition and allows for four simultaneous streams.

In addition to these options, Netflix also introduced the "extra member" tier, which is an add-on for standard or premium subscribers. This allows subscribers to add one extra member with the standard plan and two extra members with the premium plan at an additional cost of £4.99 per member. However, the extra member tier only allows for streaming on one device at a time and restricts users to one profile.

The YouTuber suggests that while the premium plan may not be worth the higher price for most people, the extra member option offers the best value for money. However, finding someone who is already subscribed to standard or premium and willing to add them as an extra member can be a challenge. The YouTuber also advises viewers not to keep their Netflix subscription for the entire year but rather to alternate between streaming services to save money.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk, advises consumers to carefully consider their streaming needs and evaluate the available options. He suggests canceling the Netflix subscription when not actively using it and opting for different streaming services based on the availability of desired content.

Netflix has made changes to its pricing structure, eliminating the basic plan and offering new options to customers. The video by Andy Clever Cash provides a comprehensive breakdown of these changes and offers insights into which plan offers the best value for money. Consumers are advised to assess their streaming needs and consider alternative streaming services to save money.

Netflix ought to get rid of all the cheaper options and drop the price of ultra high def to £10.99 a month I'd imagine they'd actually make more money overall as they have to use 4k equipment if they have ANY uhd output, might as well have everyone contribute to that cost.
