Sometimes our furniture can end up looking a bit worse for wear, but we never get around to changing it because the cost of replacing or reupholstering is simply too much.

However, one savvy couple has managed to dodge the expensive cost they were quoted for upgrading their bed, transforming it using a clever budget hack.

Natalie & Craig Smith, 49 & 51 from Halifax, West Yorkshire, who work as a Pensions Team Manager and decorator and have 3 children aged 23, 19 and 17, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘We had a bed custom-made in white velvet. Big mistake as it got dirty quickly, especially on the headboard on my husband’s side. We got quotes for reupholstering but it would have set us back £450, so that option was out.

‘We started to think about how we could dodge such a huge expense. We'd already had a joiner friend put panelling on our bedroom wall. I wanted a plain colour rather than a pattern so that I could put any colour bedding with it. My husband Craig, who is a decorator, thought there is a paint for everything! So he researched it, and found paint for fabric.

‘I was apprehensive at first but the reviews were fantastic. People had used it to paint their sofas! So I thought if other people had done it, we may as well give it a go. We got the paint from the Furniture Clinic Store online and it cost £89.99.

‘As the paint is a dark grey colour and we have white walls and flooring we didn't want the paint to get everywhere so we started out by covering the floor with a big plastic sheet. We removed the mattress from the bed and put it to one side. Then we removed the drawers, footboard and headboard and split the divan base. We both then had a paintbrush and started painting the headboard and we were really impressed, so we painted the rest of the bed.

‘The packaging says it only takes a couple of hours to dry, but we let it dry overnight. We slept on the sofa as I didn't want to risk any paint getting on the mattress or the new bedding. The next day there were some patches so my husband did a second coat. We left it to dry overnight again just to be on the safe side.

‘After that we concluded that 2 coats of paint were enough. Previously the bed was a soft velvet - it’s not soft anymore, but it’s not rough or uncomfortable. You can’t tell it's been painted at all.

‘It was really easy to do. The results are amazing and so much cheaper than having the bed recovered! We didn’t even know this was an option before doing our research, and the whole process went well and was straightforward. I definitely recommend it to others looking to do similar with their beds or fabric furniture.’
