Poundland Resurrects 71 Wilko Stores
Deal Hunters,
More of our beloved Wilko stores, which sadly closed their doors, are about to get a new lease on life as Poundland stores!
James Flanders at The Sun reported that following Wilko's unfortunate journey into administration on August 10, a rush of retailers have swooped in to salvage some of their sites. Our discount champion, Poundland, has been at the forefront, securing 71 stores in total.
What's thrilling is that 20 of these stores have already been spruced up and reopened in the past fortnight. And here's the real scoop – another nine are set to open their doors this coming Saturday, October 14. Keep an eye out in locations like Church Street (Ripley, Derbyshire), Deansgate (Bolton), The Interchange Centre (Gateshead) and more.
These stores will mostly showcase Poundland’s treasure trove of deals but will also feature some remaining Wilko products.
Remember, though these initial openings may seem basic, a complete revamp is set for 2024, so there's more excitement in store.
Darren Kay, the bigwig at Poundland, expressed how these openings are significant for our communities. And, as we always say, more stores mean more deals!
But the transformation of Wilko isn’t just in Poundland’s basket. The Range has grabbed the Wilko brand, including its name and website, for a cool £5 million. Meanwhile, B&M has snapped up 51 stores, promising to shed light on their plans next month.
Closing thought? It’s tough out there for retailers. Online shopping and economic factors are reshaping our high streets. Tom Church from LatestDeals.co.uk summed it up: "The evolution of our high street is both bittersweet and inevitable. As consumers, it’s our job to adapt, support, and continue hunting for those golden deals."
This is great news it's sad wilco had to close but fingers crossed the staff have kept their jobs
Our Wilko was pretty huge as it took over a Tesco store I've never seen a Poundland anywhere near that size and there is a poundland just 2 minutes walk away anyway. In fact there was a Poundland about 20 seconds away walking and that is another unoccupied store. I think the only thing viable for the Yeovil Wilko would either be another supermarket like a Sainsburys which we haven't got currently which is unlikely as not great for parking in the area or an indoor market.
