Sainsbury’s Nectar vs Tesco Clubcard: Loyalty Card Wars Heat Up!
Hey Deal Hunters,
It's a high-octane showdown in the supermarket arena. The big players, Sainsbury's and Tesco, are clashing over customer loyalty. Earlier this year, Sainsbury's launched its Nectar prices, in a clear bid to compete with Tesco’s Clubcard prices scheme. But, as always, we need to drill deeper to uncover where the real savings are. With Aldi and Lidl snapping at their heels and ‘price match’ schemes popping up, how can we tell where the genuine value is?
James Flanders at The Sun reported that in their analysis, the range of own-label products at some supermarkets is diminishing, making us cough up more for branded goods. They took a closer look at how Nectar and Clubcard prices really compare and where we can trim our costs.
Here's the Juice:
- They compared 12 everyday groceries at each store. While Kingsmill soft white bread had a Clubcard offer, Nectar gave a discount on Tropicana orange juice, showing promotions vary between them.
- Tesco's basket came to £31.92, but with a Clubcard, it dropped to £23.54 — a yearly saving of £435.76. Sainsbury’s, a bit pricier at £33.17, dipped to £26.67 with a Nectar card, saving £338 annually.
- Watch out! The deals change weekly. Sainsbury’s could be cheaper next week!
- Most loyalty price cuts are on branded items. For the best value, you might have to skip member deals and pick the cheapest own-label product. Doing this made the basket at Tesco £18.06 and at Sainsbury’s £18.25.
Why All the Data Love?
The battle isn't just for your shopping allegiance, but also for your data. According to Adam Leyland of The Grocer Magazine, data helps supermarkets craft personalized offers. But Jake Moore from ESET warns of potential price hikes based on our buying patterns.
In Conclusion:
Both Sainsbury's and Tesco are striving to give us the best deals. While Tesco claims they're at their most competitive, Sainsbury’s is upping their Aldi Price Match game and rebranding their value range.
