Savvy Mum: “I save £60 a month on my shop using simple trick anyone can do”
- Zoe Jutsum, 33, saves £10 to £15 every week by using the Too Good To Go app
- She regularly buys Aldi bags of food that would otherwise go in the bin
- Zoe says: "It feels amazing not only saving money, but saving waste too!”
The food shop is a constant and rising expense - but one savvy family has managed to save up to £15 a week, or £60 a month, on their food shop using a clever app.
Zoe Jutsum, 33, a stay-at-home mum of two from Weston-super-Mare, uses an app called Too Good To Go.
The app describes itself as a "social impact company on a mission to inspire and empower everyone to fight food waste together”.
Also calling itself "the world's largest marketplace for surplus food”, the app works by allowing local stores, cafes and restaurants to sell food that would otherwise go to waste for seriously reduced prices.
Zoe uses the app regularly to shave serious cash off her regular food shops.
Zoe told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: "I started getting Too Good To Go bags a few months ago.
"A friend had had a few and I wanted to see what it was like. At first, I used it as a treat and got bakery-themed bags which usually had lots of doughnuts or tasty bread.
"But then we started trying supermarket bags to see if we could try and save on our weekly shop.
"We started using Morrisons and found that although it was good quality still, it tended to be a lot of green veg.
"We then started trying the Aldi bags, which are definitely my favourite, and the variety you get in them is insane.
"You usually get a good variety of meat, bread and veg, and we saved lots of money by not needing to buy meat or anything like that on our usual shop.
“For example, we recently had an Aldi bag for £3.30 and that had three or four lots of meat plus lots of fruits and veggies, bread and cakes which I anticipated totalled over £20!
"It’s enabled us as a family to try lots of different foods that we wouldn’t usually try.
"My main tip is you need to be quick.
"The most popular bags sell out super fast.
"We’ve also found different days better; Aldi on a Saturday is probably our best day.
"Make sure you look at star ratings and customer reviews.
"They are so important to gauge what kind of bags you’re going to get.
"But you also need to be aware that not all bags are great.
"At the end of the day, you’re helping shops with them not throwing out waste - you can’t choose what this is and you’ve just got to accept it.
"Sometimes we get too much fresh food like salads and we often share this with our friends.
"My husband is known as the vegetarian Santa to one friend because he delivers so much salad to them!
"It’s a great scheme and we love it.
"I’ve saved myself between £10 and 15 a week on food shops by doing it this way.
"It feels amazing not only saving money but saving waste too.
"I hate throwing things out and this has helped in so many ways!”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “Two things I love - avoiding food waste and saving money on shopping - go hand in hand with the amazing Too Good To Go app.
“I’ve long been a fan, and Zoe is using it perfectly.
“To get the best deals yourself, do as Zoe says and get to know the best days and shops to get the bags that suit your needs.
“You could end up making significant savings yourself!
“Other ways to save money at the supermarket include using new customer discount codes for online grocery shopping. Iceland has a discount code, for example, giving you £10 off a £45 spend right now.”
