Thrifty Mum Creates Incredible Frozen-Themed Bedroom For Just £50, Saving £100s
- Sharnene Jewell, 48, spent just £50 creating the Frozen bedroom of dreams
- She colour-matched B&Q paint to a half-price Elsa pillowcase to create a concrete effect
- She painted everything from a Gumtree four-poster bed to a lamp from a boot sale
Themed rooms can cost a fortune, but one mum has figured out the key to creating a child’s dream bedroom on a shoestring.
Sharnene Jewell, 48, a stay-at-home mum from Cardiff, was asked for a Frozen-themed bedroom by her daughter Amaya, nine.
Speaking to LatestDeals.co.uk, Sharnene said didn’t know where to start, but soon realised she would save hundreds by completing the transformation from a Barbie to a Frozen room herself rather than buying expensive wallpaper or asking a decorator to help.
She set about creating a mural worthy of a film set, buying the paint from B&Q and getting them to match the colour of a Frozen duvet set she had bought half price in the Next sale.
"When my little girl said she wanted a Frozen-themed room, I didn’t have a clue where to start,” Sharnene told LatestDeals.co.uk.
“My daughter loves horses and the new movie has a beautiful water horse in it so I knew that was what I was going to attempt to paint on the main wall.
"I found some pictures online and I used chalk to draw the outline. I used chalk because it’s easy to wash off if I wanted to make any adjustments.
"I bought some B&Q Valspar tester pots in colours to match the Disney Frozen bedding that I bought half price in the Next sale for £17.50.
"I took a pillowcase and they scanned it - it was so easy and the pots are a great size for the money too.
"I was really pleased that I could rework her second-hand furniture from beige stone to white and then grey concrete effect.
"I used two colours and sponged them on while slightly mixing them as I went.
"I used a grey which I mixed myself from some old paints and a beige.
"I decided to also paint the light, clock and unicorn head all matching.
“I have changed the colour of them three times to match different decor.
"The unicorn head was from the Next sale and was originally rose gold.
"The clock was from The Range and the mirror I bought from a boot sale for £2. I painted them all in the same concrete effect
“The lamp I had bought in a boot sale and painted in the same concrete effect.
“The bed I’ve upcycled several times, just by painting it differently. I bought that second-hand from Gumtree.
"Because I only really bought white paint, a few tester pots and the bedding, it cost me only £50.
"Painting a mural and up-cycling is a great way to change decor without spending money.
"It would have probably cost hundreds to get someone else to do it, especially the mural.
"I think repurposing furniture is money-saving and better for the environment.
“If you want to do the same, I recommend looking at fashionable high-end retail websites for things you like and then thinking of ways you can recreate the same look for less.
“It took me about a week.
"My little girl absolutely loved it, so it was well worth the effort.
"She was amazed, her little face was a picture.”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “As children grow up, their tastes for different TV shows, books and movies change, but it can be really expensive to transform their bedroom every time they fall in love with a new character.
“Sharnene has got the knack of transformation down to a fine art - and best of all, she’s done it on a serious budget.
“Her work just shows you don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive themed wallpaper, furniture or artwork - creativity and hard work wins every time!”
