- The scheme aims to combat data poverty, especially during the holiday season.
Virgin Media O2 has expanded its National Databank scheme to all O2 stores across the UK, providing free mobile data, texts, and calls to those in need. This expansion means that individuals, regardless of their current mobile provider, can access a free O2 SIM card that offers 25GB of data per month for a year.
The initiative, launched in 2021 in partnership with the Good Things Foundation, is designed to combat digital exclusion and ensure that people in poverty have access to essential online services. It helps individuals manage tasks like booking medical appointments, applying for jobs, and staying connected with family and friends during the festive season. More than 300 O2 stores are now participating in the program, with each store offering the free data package to those eligible.
Nicola Green, Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “We know that people experiencing poverty are having to make difficult choices around how they spend their money – but affording mobile data shouldn’t be one of them. That’s why Virgin Media O2 has rolled out the National Databank to all its O2 stores nationwide, offering free O2 mobile data to connect people in need, so they can get online and stay in touch with their loved ones this Christmas and beyond.”
The expansion of the National Databank aims to help tackle the ongoing issue of data poverty. Research from Virgin Media O2 reveals that 26% of people on low incomes are struggling to pay their mobile phone bills, and many feel isolated without internet access.
Helen Milner OBE, Group CEO of Good Things Foundation, commented: “Virgin Media O2’s work to help reduce digital exclusion now allows the Databank to extend its impact to even more people and is a lifeline to those struggling to access the internet this Christmas. Together, we can fix the digital divide for good.”
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk comments, "This is a brilliant initiative, especially as Christmas can be a tough time for many families struggling financially. Offering free data not only helps with essential tasks but also helps people feel more connected. Virgin Media O2 is truly making a difference in reducing digital exclusion."
