Amazon Not Repecting UK Law and Rules regarding Parcel Thefts
Ask a Question
Amazon are asking customers who have not had their parcels delivered or had parts of the order missing to file a police report before they will escalate the matter further, contrary to the law
It is bad enough trying to get the police to investigate burglaries and theft never mind missing Amazon parcels
Some people have obtained a crime number but Amazon would still not refund their orders
I can see both sides of this dispute, as it could be thieves stealing the parcel from the doorstep, or it could be a rogue delivery driver taking the goods, or thirdly it could be the customer saying they never received it when they did , where a parcel has not been signed for
Whatever the cause according to UK law Amazon is responsible to sort this out
Reading the news daily this type of thing seems to have got worse with austerity and i can see more incidents occuring in the future
Have you had this happen to you ?
Considering how many parcels are just left on doorsteps I'm not surprised. Surely it can't be the buyers fault though. There's no way the police have time to investigate these thefts.
Midnightflower though with thefts it's the polices job. Not saying that Amazon are right to dump it on the police without finding out if its a case been delivered to the wrong address
I've genuinely found Amazon customer service to be pretty decent in dealing with issues. I don't think I've ever had anything get nicked but the couriers have left my parcels in very obvious places which could have easily been stolen. The only time I think I've lost an order is when the courier put my parcel in a empty rubbish bin and I didn't see it was in there when I put rubbish in the bin and the bin was emptied before I saw the image of my item inside the bin a day or so later. Amazon refunded me. I couldn't believe a courier would put a parcel in a bin as so called safe delivery.
If you are in a situation where parcels are stolen from your door step I guess you would have to use click and collect. Perhaps there are people that keep having parcels stolen but who just keep ordering the same way which would be unreasonable expecting Amazon to pay out for theft.
It's an absolute joke to expect the Police to file a report on a stolen parcel, as we become a poorer country crimes like shop lifting have gone up hugely and the Police don't investigate most of those. There are approaching 1 million cars on the road that are untaxed and a high percentage of those may be uninsured and possibly have no MOT. The Police have less and less resources as the level of crimes increases and they face cut backs.
There may come a point when Amazon won't deliver to some areas and they start closing accounts more frequently who repeatedly claim stolen parcels.
BonzoBanana Its the same with car insurance B, it has sky rocketed anyway, but the insurance companies charge more on top in areas where there are higher car thefts , so the same would apply to deliveries where they may restrict or stop them eventually
telmel I suppose they will have to. There isn't much good news in the UK at the moment. We seem to be on economic suicide and people don't understand punishments need to be a deterrent. There is no point being idealistic when that viewpoint is completely unrealistic.
BonzoBanana That's part of the problem here B, the deterrent isn't enough, when the criminals see prisoners released early due to overcrowding and punishment ends up community service instead of prison they feel they have been given a 'get out of jail free' card, literally, or in some cases a 'no chance of jail' card , theres no spaces !
We have left parcels outside for hours on occasion as we've not known it was delivered. Its getting worse I guess the driver aren't given enough time to wait for each person. We decided to get a ring door bell to reduce the issue
Imnotcheap Same here earlier this week the delivery driver left our parcel outside the backdoor in the pouring rain , the box was soaked through by the time we got home. Items were returned but we had the hassle of going to the post office and queuing ( don't get me started on PO service/queues) to return it . As far as possible I try to have deliveries to amazon lockers but that's not always possible for everything.
Mango4 one thing a few years ago was thrown over back fence and left for over a week in bad weather. It was fine only swimsuit. They hadn't left card so we didn't know till enquired about it
Imnotcheap The ring door bell is a godsend I, being able to see and talk to a delivery driver when not at home has saved so many parcels being returned to the post office or depot and having to be picked up and has paid for itself many times over, besides being a great security tool, and you can see the delivery and who it was, and if you pay the monthly fee keep a record for any disputes
A great addition for a small monthly fee
Imnotcheap It depends I, you dont have to pay it if you dont want footage saved, it still works fine , otherwise its a couple of pounds a month, i think i pay £3.49
Imnotcheap no probs I
I forgot to mention mine is wired , it was cheaper to buy than the battery ring , but i was lucky, i already had the existing wiring from an old intercom speaker , so no expense using an electrician but i suppose battery is fine, you just need to change it when needed
Imnotcheap My ring isn't located on my front door I, it is on the outside gate leading to the road, it is relatively simple to wire it to a normal front door where there is an existing electric doorbell, but if i hadn't had the wiring in place already, it would have meant calling an electrician to install wiring and connecting , working out quite expensive
I would have then opted for the battery ring, as luck had it i didn't need to
I also had to buy a wi fi extender as the signal from the house wasnt strong enough, but it works a treat now , although it did take a few tries before it connected to the internet
I would say it is one of the best purchases i have ever made, i am very happy with it
The only downside with having it on the outside gate is anyone passing or traffic sets it off, so i have a constant ringing in the house
I understand how quasimodo must have felt
telmel hope we just as happy with ours. I hope to set it up so we can see on echo show aswell as phone
Imnotcheap Yes the echo is another option, i have one but rarely use it , i think you need to leave it switched on to use with the ring, although not 100% certain as i have never tried it
You can use it as an external speaker to the ring i believe, but i have purchased the plug in speaker , a bit expensive, but you can control it from your smartphone, i often turn the volume down on it when the constant ringing is driving me mad as mentioned before
A close relative just had an Amazon email saying his delivery was due etc. Knowing he had no outstanding orders he contacted Amazon who said they would cancel it......they didn't. When he checked his Amazon account he found someone had added a company address and name to which the order was sent. He looked them up, phoned but they denied it was anything to do with them. He spent the whole day yesterday visiting his bank, stopping any unusual payments, getting a new card, contacting Amazon again, as the goods were delivered.....they wouldn't have been had the original person earlier in the day stopped the order as he said he would. He woke up to all this, the order being placed in dead of night. He was also told that police will not be involved if under £200 as with shoplifting, it was £5 under. My relative is convinced this is an inside job and that someone working at Amazon added this address (some sort of warehouse) to his account. Everyone he spoke to was Eastern European.....just saying, but they have been responsible for a lot of gang crime, including insurance scams causing deliberate car accidents, shoplifting etc and it is time something was done.
Lynibis It doesnt surprise me L about scams inside the delivery companies, i doubt the employees are scrutinised enough when applying for the job , the pay is so low they probably will take on anyone , even with criminal form , not saying this applies to all , just some , but enough to cause problems
I watched a you tube video a few weeks ago about a delivery driver dropping off a package then returning a few minutes later to steal it ,not realising he was on camera
There are definitely a few angles to this. Firstly, paying crap wages and massively over-stretching delivery drivers. So many are going to be pushed to get packages delivered insanely quick. That's on Amazon and delivery companies paying as cheap as possible and reaping the rewards. They need to stop paying peanuts and expecting the world.
On the other hand, there probably are some percentage unscrupulous buyers who pretend they never received the package, or received the "wrong package"... extremely hard to prove unless Amazon start recording the contents of EVERY package sent and having a way to reference this (not practical).
However, I have heard Amazon will ban users if they consistently have issues with "incorrect" packages or "lost" packages. I don't know how true this is, but again... this is also in Amazon's hands. If they don't want to sell to certain customers because the numbers show it's statistically improbable they've had so many "genuine" issues, then this AGAIN is on AMAZON to solve.
Trying to outsource problems Amazon could solve themselves to the police is ridiculous, it's wasting tax payer resources / police time so they can squeeze even more billions.
My wife ordered a new phone last month, it didn't arrive but was put as delivered, customer service was terrible about it, she eventually got a replacement, it was obvious that the delivery driver nicked it and I think in the end they knew this
martinlufc5637 It happened to me once M, luckily i had taken out insurance and the company reimbursed me
martinlufc5637 That wasn't delivered by Hermes (aka Evri) or Yodel? Those two companies can be unreliable.
PhilipMarc I cant remember the company M, i think it was UPS but not 100% as it was years ago
I didn't get the full value of the phone back as there was a ceiling on the cover , but near enough
PhilipMarc it was Amazon delivery, it showed they were 5 stops away, so waited at the door, never showed up and when I looked at the app again, it said was delivered
martinlufc5637 The delivery drivers do this all the time, if they are behind schedule due to pressure, they make up problems, like no one at home, cannot find the address, or a variety of other reasons leaving the customer frustrated and perplexed
The companies know this goes on and allow it despite the deluge of customers complaining
PhilipMarc ...Don't get me started on that SHODDY company Evri..A few days ago they left a big Debenhams parcel on our path, didn't deliver it, ANYONE could have pinched it!
Let's say it's a package worth £10, so Amazon expects the customer to report it to the police? That seems like a waste of police's time (and the police already waste a lot of time themselves as it is).
Moreover, people who steal packages are just pathetic. It doesn't belong to them, leave it alone.
I for example used to take in my neighbor's packages and then give it to her when she'd be home just to make sure it was safe.
PhilipMarc You are an example of a good neighbour P, but some are not so helpful
It reminds me of that ITV advert where the old woman is taking a young persons parcels in and keeping them, he knocks at her door to see if she has seen anything of his parcels and she comes to the door wearing his designer trainers ,the husband is also wearing his stuff in the background , EDIT, managed to find the video , its about having the correct addresses
Heres an article where a neighbour took revenge on one stealing from her

Some company left my partner's order on our lawn in full view of everyone, could have been stolen if I hadn't found it, another time a parcel was left outside my back door so I could trip over it!!
