Anyone Turning off Electric to Get Vouchers?
Ask a Question
I have just spoken to my 85 year old mother who is literally sitting in dark, without any heating on so her electric company will send her a voucher. Tonight it is for an hour and half. I am absolutely fuming with these companies. Are we really getting to the stage where this is fair? I have vision of visiting my mother and find she has frozen to death.
I have done this before even today with British Gas called Peak Save between 4.30pm-6pm. I think it is only worth 50p-75p for me, according to my gas bill. But I will not be doing anymore of it.
jam45 I was wondering what the actual saving would be for an hour and a half. I love the fact they are doing it when most people are suppose to be cooking a meal for themselves or family. They are now dictating when you eat.
eyeballkerry people make their own decisions they are not losing the power just encouraged to reduce during peak times. We’re not offered any incentives.
Is this with Octopus as i've only just joined so couldn't connect to this but this was to save on electric I think, not sure of the full details.
HEDGEHOGS I read in the news yesterday that it was British Gas doing it, not sure if any others are. I did read you were allowed during the time to have lights on. My mother must have mis-read as she was only using one light yesterday. Still think it is madness for a 85 year to be sitting in the a cold house with one light to save money. By the way, my mother has enough money in savings.
eyeballkerry I only realize that I have taken part since August this year. Using my calculator I saved £1.49 before VAT and with VAT I saved £1.03p!! I used a torch only for light for 90 minutes, 8 times!! (Aug-Nov). (leaving fridge/freezer, gas oven clock on, washing my hands with cold water, central heating off) A load of rubbish and a proper con coming from British Gas.
We did this before with e-on next and did not qualify our bills whot up instead by £12.00 a month, and no one was in at the time e-on next said it was correct. I think it is just a rip-off
Yeah we had it yesterday, we turned everything off apart from the lounge light, got a message earlier to say we didn't save any electricity so won't get a voucher lol, nothing but a scam
I know people who make about £30 per month (from what they told me anyway) and if you can work it into your lifestyle then it makes sense. I think they just go shopping or out and about so don't really notice much difference in their lives.
I don't think it's a bad thing as long as people aren't being pressured into doing it
I've read about these schemes but I am not taking part. I do plenty of other energy saving things without doing this. I will try use as little as possible no matter what time of day it is. At 85 your mother has earned the right to sit in a warm house with her lights on, screw the voucher!
MrsCraig My thoughts exactly but I worry the elderly get drawn into this schemes. The funny thing is, she is making a Christmas cake. It costs a fortune for the ingredients and a fortune to cook. I told her just to buy one. It’s only her and my brother eating it.
eyeballkerry I agree, we were always telling my Granny to make sure her heating was on and not to worry about the cost. Christmas dinners are expensive to make, especially if it is just for 2 people.
People are willing to lower their standards so they receive a voucher which probably isn't worth much, anyway.
