What Are Your Christmas Traditions?

Ask a Question

My gran is a sucker for betterware & those mags you get free in the paper with all sorts of silly or useless gadgets and we all get them as gifts at Christmas.

We call them "Granny Buys"

We have bets on what it might be & who's will be the worst.

Out of 9 of us if you have guessed right or close to what you got or win the vote for having the worst "granny buy" you get to swap it for any of the other 8 "granny buys"

Then we all have to try & regift them back to my gran through out the year 😂 then the 1st person she catches out saying she had given that as a Christmas present then hosts the next Christmas at their house.

Although for the first time this year we all managed to regift her back the "granny buys" & as I was last to do so, I'm hosting Christmas this year 🤣

Some of the gifts have been.. The hair cutting comb, Novelty washing up gloves with pink fluffy bits at the top, SIM card reader, A string organizer gadget, Litter grabber stick, Blond & Ginger colour root touch up spray (we all have brown or grey hair) Oh the list is endless but we all look forward to this and it's become our family Christmas tradition 🤣🤣🤣.

Ha ha, sounds like your gran is on to you, she buys you all stuff she wants herself knowing you will regift it.

Lynibis PMSL I'm going to get her a bottle of Sailor Jerry this year, she doesn't drink & that my favourite but nobody ever buys me it. Knowing my luck she would give it to her nextdoor neighbour 🤣🤣

jam45 us olduns are a canny bunch. I get presents for my lot at half price in the new year sales, mainly from boots, for the following Xmas and birthdays during the year. Saves me a lot and they all get something they like. They must think I am made of money 😂😂

Don't have anything now it seems to be coming a tradition to not be able to celebrate Christmas. Last year didn't get to see my mum has she was going through cancer treatment didn't even put up the tree because my now ex lied and said he wanted to move house when he didn't. This year both me and my ex partner are Ill with a bad cold. So just had to cancel the visit from my mum as I don't want to pass anything on to her and my mum be unwell. I'm hoping next year is different.

KAW18 aww bless you. I totally understand what you are going through as I was in the same situation a couple of years ago & my mum had just finished her treatment a few weeks before Christmas & I caught COVID and couldn't see my mum or gran & my gran was really ill and ended up in hospital & we didn't think she was going to see Christmas & I couldn't go to the hospital when all the family were called in. It was absolutely heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you and I hope you go into a new & better year and celebrate & do the things you have missed out on. Sending you well wishes & a happy new year xx

KAW18 Aww I'm sure it will if you start the way you mean to go on with a positive attitude and thoughts. I know it's really hard sometimes especially when life kicks you in the ass when you're already down. I am normally a really positive person but I ended up getting through the crap by trying to find the funny even in the crappy moments if you can laugh it helps so much & doesn't feel so bad for as long not only that when I was having the worst time & cried a lot I remember thinking to myself "if I don't stop crying I'm going to die of dehydration as more tears were coming out than any thing I'd drank" which made me chuckle & that's when I managed to turn things around. Well I wish you lots of luck & happiness for next year xx

We used to do a trail of rhyming questions leading all around the house, the 'main present' was at the final destination. It was great fun for everyone working out the clues and ultimately finding their pressie. You have to be careful though as the more pressies you hide, and the more clues there are, be sure that no-one will find anyone else's clues and/or present!

tumblespots OMG my mum used to something like that for our birthday's & the end prize would be a picnic somewhere special, a day at the zoo or safari or something. I'm just glad my birthday is in July lol.

I bet you all have so much fun plus all the excitement would last all day rather than getting up going straight to the presents open in two min & everythings open & over & done before you can say "Merry Christmas" 😂

I want to come to your house for Christmas now 🤣 that sounds like a great way to spend quality time with family & keep everyone entertained for hours x

G0501 🤣 thank you very much. It didn't start off that way everyone used to dread getting things from gran. We would all say that's nice thank you & our faces were all saying what the F**k is that? 😂 We tried giving her a list of things. Everyone put a few things on the list they would like but... Nope if it wasn't out the free mags or the "I seen you coming catalogue!" (betterware) we never got it then I said one year "right whoever gets the worst present is the one that has to tell her not to waist her money on all these silly, **** or shocking granny buys. When it came to it no one had the heart to tell her so that's when the idea to gift her them back through out the year came from & the one that got caught out hosted the next Christma. The funny thing is we all genuinely look forward to it now & my gran thinks we all love the presents which makes her happy & we all have a laugh and fun from it & not just on Christmas day 🤣

There's a church that puts a Xmas tree festival. We go see it every year. It's a bit Cheesy abit naff but we love it. We get a new tree Dec 🌳 every year. The kids choose one. The plan is when they are living on their own they will have their own decorations already and collected over the years, so will have memories attached.

Jerseydrew aww that's a lovely tradition to have. My mum keeps all our Christmas cards in a box from when we were wee. Now she gives us our card to open then takes it back to put it in the box 😂 x
