Cost of Healthy Eating
Ask a Question
Doesnt it seem strange that its got to a point where it is cheaper to buy junk food and take outs rather than fresh and healthy products
Fruit is expensive now. Apples cost over 50p each and this week I bought some strawberries 400g for £2.50. I can appreciate junk food is cheaper for families on a tight budget.
Lidl/ aldi have a good range of fruits on a budget, frozen vegetables are quite cheap, it's best to shop around, I do enjoy the odd takeaway x
I think there are cheaper ways to do healthy eating it’s just looking out for good prices. Like fruit and veg with yellow sticker discounts
SaveMeSunday Yellow sticker discounts are nowhere near as good as they used to be, you could've went into Asda at a certain time of night and found everything reduced to 10p, but that just encouraged the same people in every night and loading their trolleys, they were like seagulls. now most of the stuff isn't worth buying as the discounts are really poor, you're just as well buying fresh as they would keep longer.
I’ve noticed I seem to get a lot more offers and discounts from fast food and takeaway these days and it’s so easy to get hold of
Fruit and veg is great and I feel better for eating It but see it as an extra and do not expect it too fill me up for long. Junk food, hight in fat carbs and sugar is a cheap option for replacement of expensive protein.
We have really pushed growing out own veg ,we have had potato, strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes raspberries, carrots and red onion's.
Also we have cleaned up lately with the yellow labels.
Every time I go into Asda, Iceland, Tesco and Morrisons their yellow stickers is not worth the price. Also it's the same type hanging around for the reduced items. Now I just pay the full price for fruits and vegetables that has at least a 5 day expiry date.
I'm finding that we having to buy more processed food as prices increase. I get shocked at prices every time I shop
I personally don't think its expensive to eat healthily but whether you want to do that is another matter. Lots of cheap veg available to make sensible soups etc. Eating nice tasting healthy food is another matter and obviously if you want to avoid chemicals then organic food is very prohibitive with regards pricing but I still think food can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. I eat junk food out of choice and enjoyment but I think I would save money if I actually went for more basic healthy food. I think some supermarkets subsidise some healthy foods. Iceberg lettuce I believe is typically subsidised or has a very low margin. I still find the value options of bananas, apples, pears and a few other types of fruit fairly low cost.
SaveMeSunday is that because your pregnant? Because honestly I didn't change my eating habits at all when pregnant and both of my kids where healthy weights
I have always noticed this. How expensive fruit is compared to a large packet of crisps. I know which one I would pick. But makes more money sense and more filling.
Yes it’s just wrong. I don’t buy as much fruit as I used to because of cost. I now buy more tinned in juice, not syrup, as it’s cheaper and keeps. I still get a bit of fresh but not much. Potatoes are cheap. Vegetables we look at offers or club prices.
I often see potatoes reduced. I bought a 2kg bag of potatoes the other day in Morrisons for 28p. Potatoes are healthy when jacketed however they do have quite a lot of starch/sugars which is good if you need to get your calorie intake up but bad if you are trying to lose weight. 15 potatoes for about 28p is close to 2p each and while cooking them can be a small cost I still think its good value. Once cooked freeze what you don't use and then you have an easy convenient meal without being full of chemicals.
I think this depends on many things like what healthy food you have access to where you live, how you shop, how/if you cook and portion sizes. For me, it's not cheaper to buy junk food across the board but appreciate the same can't be said for everyone.
Sounds like laziness to me. You can make lots of healthy food on a budget it just takes time to prepare.
It's ridiculous how expensive it is. I know from seeing how rubbish packed lunches are at work. People can't afford decent food it's wrong
Yeah healthy food has been more expensive than unhealthy food, in supermarkets, for as long as i can remember. You would think with the obesity crisis in this country the government would do something to make it more affordable
I don't think it's as expensive as dome make out to be but it is more expensive than junk food and alot of the healthy foods are stuff you have to spend time on and make from scratch so to some are less appealing. I've found alot of carbs seem to be cheapest stuff eg pasta, bread, potatoes
So pricey to buy super healthy! Especially if you’re vegetarian or vegan. Cost of living has definitely impacted this though.
Just had a flyer from the local takeaway and they are now charging £10 for a doner. It's getting very expensive to get my salad on it these days
I've noticed that now the summer fruits have gone, and we are not having salads for dinner our shopping bill is about £20 a week lighter. It's madness.
I grow my own veg, potatoes ect... Wife makes meals and freezes them, so we don't buy much veg, 50p for an apple is ridiculous
