Cute Breeds of Dog?
Other
I'm thinking about getting a dog this year, but I don't know what breed to look for... what breed of dog does everybody have?
Getting a dog isn't just a case of cuteness. You need to study the breed once you have decided and before you buy. Peculiarities of the breed, illnesses or other things they are prone to, what food they eat, how much exercise they need and also the need to be trained and disciplined. Picking up poo is the worst part for me and one of the reasons I don't have a dog, remember you have to carry a plastic bag to collect it when out walking. They can be a big expense if they get ill or have an accident so pet insurance is a must. You also have to think about the cost of kennels if you want to ever go away as it is not fair to impose your dog on friends or relatives who may not like to say no. They would have to really be dog lovers.
I know that getting a dog isn't a case of cuteness. But, I would like to explore different breeds before settling for one.
If you have kids have plenty of time and energy and a lot of patience I’d say get a small beagle. I have 3. They are wonderful with my grandchildren.
Hi louiselaingX
Can you answer the following to help narrow it down a bit?
If you work, where would your new dog be? With you at work? alone at home (in or outdoors)? or with someone else?
Do you live in a flat or a house, and do you have your own garden?
Do you have neighbours within barking distance?
Are you ok with it pooing and weeing everywhere in your home for two or three months before it’s house-trained? Some ‘get-it’ faster than others.
Would you prefer breeds that don’t shed?
Which is more important to you intelligence or cuteness?
Some dogs are much brighter than others
Are there going to be any babies or small children around your dog either now or at any time over the next 10 to 15 years?
There‘s lots to think about.
No one can give you responsible advice about what breed to choose without the answers to these questions and considering temperament, the needs of human family members, and the needs of the dog.
My mum is always able to keep the dog if I ever needed to be somewhere etc. I also have neighbours that would be more than happy to help.
