Here's Why You Should Eat Your Vegetables First to Lose Weight

In the News

We have all heard this from our mothers or fathers, 'eat your greens'

But scientists are now telling us to eat our greens 'first', before our carbohydrates etc

A growing number of studies have found that eating fiber-rich vegetables, protein or fat at the start of a meal, and eating refined carbohydrates like rice, bread or pasta last, can improve blood sugar levels and stimulate higher levels of hormones that promote fullness and satiety. Some preliminary studies suggest it may even help with weight loss

Are you a veg lover or can't you stand greens ?

I am not a vegetable lover at all. I wish I was. I like peas and white cabbage if mixed in a recipe. Raw carrot at a push but that is my lot.

eyeballkerry Thats a start E, if it helps control glucose for diabetes and can help control your weight it seems worth it

telmel I am very good when it comes to a casserole, I can eat most things once cooked for a long time and covered in gravy. I did forget, I love leeks, especially in a leek gratin.

I tend to eat a bit of each throughout a meal. I couldn't munch through roasties and yorkies at the end of a Sunday dinner. I am not so sure all this stuff is proven because it takes a long time for food to pass through and be digested so I am not sure that eating veg first would be enough time to prepare for the carbs.

Having said that it is good to persuade kids to eat veg first or they get left at the end!

Lynibis It's good to get some kids to eat veg at all L

I hear and read about some that never eat it

I often wonder how they fare healthwise in later life

telmel I worry about my youngest grandson who always leaves his veg and all the cajoling in the world doesn't make him, he is 15!

His cousin now 21 was very fussy in teens but now he eats healthier than anyone I know, goes to the gym and is in final year of uni so his brain is working out too. He has a great physique.

Lynibis I think its just a stage they go through sometimes , some kids deliberately rebel if you insist they eat something , they can make their own choices as an adult

I'm a plant-based lover and eat a huge variety of steamed vegetables. I usually eat 2-3 different types of vegetable portions before eating dinner. Tonight it's spring greens, broccoli and butternut squash 😃

Consumer I do the same C, it gets harder as you age as you don't retain the vitamins in the body as you did when younger and you are more prone to illness

I don’t like any veg at all but was determined my kids wouldn’t be the same and thankfully they’re all veg lovers apart from brussel sprouts (oldest daughter does like these) so I did something right 😂. I really wish I did like veg cos I know how much I’m losing out by not eating them. My kids also make sure my grandkids eat there veg too. They’re all broccoli lovers though they like most veg, that just seems to be all their favourites

Dieticians have been saying this for years but the reason i heard is that the vegetables take up more space in your stomach so fill you up more.

jms19 Possibly that too J, but if it helps to keep you healthy and lose weight i don't think the reason matters too much , just dont eat too many brussel sprouts , they can fill the stomach that can kick up a stink 🤢

It doesn’t work. I’ve eaten my veg first for the past couple of days and weighed myself this morning, no change.
