Culprit found after £7,000 worth of Koi Carp disappear from mans pond
In the News
'It ain't half otter mum' , to coin a phrase
But the heat was on when this man found his Koi Carp kept disappearing from his pond he eventually discovered the culprit was a hungry otter
It devoured and killed 106 of his fish worth £7,000 and that was excluding the cost of chicken wire he had installed around the ponds to protect the fish
He could not do anything about the situation as the otter is a protected species
When he complained to the local council their helpful response was he should think himself lucky he had otters coming into his garden !!
Maybe he should switch his carp for pirhanas , it would be the otter that would be lunch then

My dad had pet ferrets and they bite a bit but I think an Otter might be quite a handful.I'm reminded of that sad film Ring Of Bright Water.
MelissaLee1 i used to work looking after otters (and other animals) and they were pretty vicious. It was asian short clawed otters i looked after but i can imagine the European ones have a mean bite as well.
jms19 I've always fancied working with animals but if they sent me in with some of em I'd not be nearly so brave.I had an encounter with an Emu in Australia once in a wildlife park!
I have a fish pond and i've had my pond for quite a few years. My koi weren't expensive as I bought them from a local garden centre when they were closing down. They have grown to about 2/3 pounds in weight. One morning I opened the curtains and found a big heron with one of my koi in its beak. I chased it off and it landed on my shed. It took it 45 minutes to get my koi down its long neck. I now have a very strong net covering the pond. Close up they are quite big in size and frightening.
I was stunned years ago to find a small dead Koi at the side of our bin so kept watching where my 2 cats went.. Then I saw Phoenix my little black cat sat on the fence looking into the garden where the pond was a few houses down & I knew!
telmel ....Yep that's definitely my Phoenix only he wears a sparkly green bow tie on St Patrick's Day!
