Pubs Going out of Business? I Wonder Why?

Ask a Question

Me and MrsChimp just went to the local for a drink it was £4.60 a pint for Guinness! I was absolutely shocked.

Now I can get 20 440ml cans from Iceland today for £20, which is a bit cheaper.

Why are the pubs moaning that they might close because they don't have the custom?

I think times have changed so much. No such thing as a cheap drink down the local anymore which is why I think people are starting to host more at home

£4.60 would be considered good value in my area. I'm usually charged £6-£7.

If prices keep rising at this rate the price of a pint in London could be £10.50 by 2030

We had lunch at a pub today as a treat. The prices on the main menu were ridiculous - £16 for a burger and fries. So we ordered off the kids menu and that was more than enough for us.

The pubs near us are considered gastro so doubled the prices. Mind you they must be doing something right, the car park was full the other day.

Yup , buy your alcohol from a Supermarket and save a fortune no doubt . Perhaps invite your friends round and have interesting chats ? Perhaps you might ask your guests to contribute to your heating and lighting bills ?

Maybe even ask them to donate a bit towards your service and washing up (minimum wage of course ) . Perhaps also they would be willing to contribute towards your Sky and BT sports bills .

Yes I'd far rather be round yours than at my local Pub to save a few bob 🤔.

Golfforall But £1.50 for a pint at home compared to ,£4.60 in the pub?

Do you understand why people just drink at home these days?

TheChimp Folks don't go down the Pub to save money . They go for the company , the crack etc . Contrary to popular belief few go to imbibe huge quantities of alcohol and get drunk .

To be fair round here it's only the youngsters who use a pub to get "half drunk " on shorts and shots to avoid the even more ridiculous prices in Nightclubs where they gravitate to afterwards . Before making a mess of themselves on the town streets in the early hours 😒.

Golfforall Glad to see that you can afford to pay around £5 a pint.

You carry on with what you're doing on the golf course when some people can't afford a tin of beans.

As you say price at a pub is ridiculous compared to drinking in.

Pubs need to keep prices low to attract people in, that and they need to know their clientel and what's the latest trends.

I don't drink often but I've found it way more enjoyable and cheaper to do so in the comfort of my home, especially as I've got cocktail equipment, much more fun.

Pubs are really important to some people, it is a shame that they close leaving people drinking at home, especially after the covid restrictions been so hard for some.

Howmuch Totally agree - Folks go to Pubs for companionship and conversation . Contrary to popular belief ? they are not the drunkards choice of venue (too pricey !) .

If you want to abuse alcohol the way to do it is to buy cheap Supermarket strong Lager or spirits and drink alone at home or on the streets .

The majority of Local Pubs do not make a fortune in profits and are acutely aware that their custom would drop off sharply if they raised prices too much .

Its always cost you more if you eat or drink out. You can say the same when purchasing a steak from a supermarket and then eating one in a restaurant, you are paying extra for the service.

Pubs try to offer too much these days. It costs them money and they pass that on to customers. They have driven away many customers who probably just like to meet up with friends for a sociable evening without blaring music, live or otherwise, football fans shouting at every goal, expensive food etc. All that must cost a fortune to provide but I am sure there is still a place for a quiet pub with only bar staff to employ and some bar snacks that don't require a chef.

My daughter runs a pub which is owned by the brewery. She doesnt have any say on the prices but they do keep going up. Something needs to be done before all the pubs go out of business.

eyeballkerry Our 2 local pubs have shut because no-one was going there. It's a shame really.

We've only got a chain pub here now, but I don't know how long that's going to last because of the outrageous prices

Most won't get the custom if they raise prices. Supermarkets offer more competitive prices on alcohol these days and then there's the super quick home delivery services to compete with...
