Ask a Question

Should second languages be taught in primary school?

I remember learning french and german in high school but nothing when I was younger.

I think it's a great idea to put languages in the curriculum early. That and music, arts, global literature.

My friends sister, who was older than us, used to teach us French when we were at primary school. I probably learnt more from her than my actual French classes in secondary school.

Leannexxx I completely agree with this.

I guess it would be BSL as there are also many different sign languages.

Leannexxx I agree it's a great language that everyone should be aware of, I remember learning a little French but that's it, sign language would be much more helpful

Leannexxx yes while I think it would be great for kids to learn a language when younger I agree that sign language would be most useful 1. Truly sign language is universal and while a few signs may be slightly different I think it would be generally understood by others

Yes. I learned French and Arabic in Primary. I have now added Spanish.

I feel like Chinese or Spanish would be the most logical languages to learn after English due to their importance in the world with such a high percentage of the world population speaking it and being linked to important countries in the global economy. I really can't see the point of learning French or German myself. Personally I like a lot of Japanese movies and anime so Japanese would be my choice of a language to learn but I feel languages should be focused on the importance in the world economy.

Never had any languages at my school but it would have been nice. Think its better kept to secondary school thought when pupils are more able to make their own choices. not convinced it should be compulsory for anyone

didbygraham I think the younger you start, the easier it is to pick up a new language (or so they say?)

I hated learning French at school. My oldest son did well at French which came in handy. Like everyone else said, sign language would be the best to learn. Image

I think a second language is useful and teaching children young is a good idea . I don't speak a second language but often feel quite embarrassed when on holiday in France or Spain, as they tend to speak English reasonably well , where as my French/Spanish is no more than a few basic words.

Never seen the point in it, we did it at school and it was completely useless to me, I've been to France they all speak English lol

Yes. Doesn't matter what language is taught. The British are the worst for only speaking one language. I work in schools and we have loads that speak English and either Polish or Portuguese. They are amazing. I've one family that speaks English, French, Polish and Chinese. My mum's first language is French failed to teach me and her granddaughter. I'm not happy as an adult.

I did learn french at primary school followed by further teaching of both french and german at secondary school. It was definitely an advantage having learned some of the language at primary school already.

I agree with sign language though, when I worked in a school it would have been a great advantage with the pupils we had.

French will soon be abolished in schools. It'll be Arabic being taught.

I don't know about French per se, but I think a second language should be introduced early on, as little kids are like sponges. My nephew (who is French - so am I) is going to a pre-school in France that does a little bit of English already. I think it's fab!

Wouldn't it make more sense to teach a language that can open doors in the international business world? Languages like Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese.

I think instead of certain languages we should have sign language as compulsory. I feel like it would be so beneficial. I've started learning it now as an adult, think it would have been alot easier to pick up at a younger age
