Unusual Pets. Do You Have Any?
Ask a Question
My daughter has recently purchased a crab as a pet. Obviously he is called Eugene. Has anyone else got unusual pets?
I haven't got any but my friends son has 2 large snails, they live in a tank in the living room. I try not to look at them as they weird me out a bit. A few friends used to have snakes, rats, tarantulas, I used to avoid going in the rooms they kept them in. I don't like crabs either so wouldn't be visiting that house.
I used to have a giant African land snail he was the best, my lil nephew has aquatic clawed frog that's pretty cool
I don't think I've ever heard of a pet crab before. We have two axolotls called Ponyo and Sôsuke.
chele44 They are a type of salamander that originate from Mexico, They look like a cross between a fish and a lizard. They are very cute and quirky. Ours live in a large tank of water and their main diet is live worms.
seasider71 oh they’re cute little things aren’t they. They’re almost human looking with that wee face and tufts of hair. Must look up more bout them
My daughter has bearded dragon called Darwin, he’s a great pet and so fast across the floor trying to get greatest heat source usually under tv unit. She also has miniature schnauzer but she dare not go near Darwin’s water or food when it’s sitting out. Darwin may only be fraction of her size but hes fierce when it comes to his food
My niece and her ex husband used to own two piranhas he called reggie and ronnie after the Krays he was obsessed with them , unfortunately ronnie ate reggie and they were down to just one Kray twin
telmel think they’re might have been times in real life Ronnie might have wanted to eat Reggie or kill him anyway when they didn’t agree with each other. My youngest sister calls her 2 sons Ronnie and Reggie - not their real names but she says they can fight like them . They’re only 7 & 5
telmel I loved reading your comment but felt guilty when I did a little laugh that Ronnie ate Reggie, that’s pretty sad really.
Jackscot I have had many pets over the years, cats, dogs, rabbits, Guinea pigs, chickens, tropical fish, outdoor fish but most people think my chinchillas are unusual.
I find it hard to understand why people want to keep any animals other than dogs, cats, rabbits. Why do people want to freak out their friends who visit? I guess it's probably me that's odd but I wouldn't even want the three I've named.
I've got a giant Holland lop house rabbit called Dumbledore he's the size of a cat and a giant albino land snail called Basil, both needed rehoming by friends so I ended up with them haha. I'm in a first floor flat so not fair to have dogs or cats as no garden or easy access for them to get outside. So a rabbit and snail are perfect for me haha
emmajd I used to have a giant rabbit called Harvey and then I got him a friend and called her Angeline. We then had many rabbits after that. I kept them all in a very large enclosure in the garden. We then got chickens and they all lived together. But when the rabbits fought the ’chicken police’ would sort them out.
I have a pet hippo at work (zoo) I am minding as his mom is undergoing surgeries and rehab so its fun
We had ferrets for a few years. All of them by accident. The first 2 were sisters & rescued by my OH as kits from his ex boss, another my OH found in the street. She was in a bad way when we found her, covered in ticks. It took us a good while to find a vet local to us that was knowledgeable in ferrets. They were actually wonderful pets, playful, & full of character. I miss my girls!
Glitterandgold I have had many pets but never a ferret. I had the same trouble with my chinchilla and trying to find a knowledgeable vet.
We've got and had a fair few different pets.
I don't really see many of them as unusual until people want to discuss them
Turtle, millipedes (giant and smaller species) jumping spiders, loads of different varieties of mantis, axolotl, gecko...
I've also had all species of domesticated hamster, whereas some people only know of the main two that are often sold. Also hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits are much more complex and have much bigger personalities than a lot of people give them credit for.
No matter what pet someone gets, they should do extensive up to date research and never just go by what the seller/pet store tells you.
Aww congrats on your daughter's new addition, I hope Eugene has a happy life with her
