Why is 'Life Sentence" Sometimes Only 7yrs??

Ask a Question

Why is it that when a crime has been committed ie murder, and the accused is given life, that they can do anything from 7yrs to 99yrs, surely life is life??

Emerge11 well there is a lot of variation state to state, not all 50 have the death penalty and sentences are different depending on location.

I think the life not meaning life thing is because prison is supposed to be rehabilitation focused and so to give someone a whole life sentence contradicts that.

Emerge11 Not quite true. Have you been reading over the years the amount of American "convicts" who has been pardon dead and alive? I don't believe in the death penalty because it only have to take a couple of corrupted policemen, "eyewitnesses", legal workers not doing their jobs properly to ruin the lives of innocent people. I really do mean innocent people.

I know its a joke. Personally I think certain sentences should be death. Not things like a person robbing a nappies clearly but if someone is murdered and out of cold blood

Jerseydrew agree 100%..... there should be set sentences for set crimes and non of this early guilty plea gets a 1/3 off your sentence for admitting your crime straight away, it's like we're patting them on the back for admitting they're criminals

Life sentences

If you’re found guilty of murder, a court must give you a life sentence. A court may decide to give a life sentence for other serious offences like rape or armed robbery.

If you’re given a life sentence it will last for the rest of your life.

If you’re ever released from prison you will spend the rest of your life ‘on licence’ in the community.

If you break licence conditions or commit another crime you can be sent back to prison.

Whole life orders

A whole life order means you will never be released from prison, except in exceptional compassionate circumstances.

I think it actually doesn't go far enough. I might say something that people don't agree with but no 1 has ever given me a valid argument to my opinion. If there was the potential of for example murder and the punishment included the death penalty then there would still be here people who have been killed. If the perpetrator thinks there is even the slightest possibility of them facing the death penalty it would prevent. In terms of why is life can be a 7 year sentence. It would be so simple to simplify the sentencing guidelines.

stuartsmith544 it doesn't prevent anything in countries with the death penalty and it didnt deter crime in this one for the thousands of years we had torture and execution

Bonnylass3 I read and watch on television many, many times that US prisoners are used as free labour. US employers loves them because they can become wealthy exploiting prisoners. At least in this country "slavery" doesn't exist for convicts.

jam45 it's pretty disgusting like you mention that they are treating criminals like slaves.....they've done the crime, and most are doing the time, so to me that's punishment enough but treating them like slaves is disgusting, there should be the exact rule for everyone worldwide!!

I agree, our justice system is completley broken. We need more investment in prisons, police and courts so we have space and they system to deal with criminals. I also think there should be a open conversation with the public to discuss what crimes matter to us and how we think things should change going forward. Tougher sentences are needed for violent crimes, murder and child abuse.
