Why Do Youngsters Throw Away 1p and 2p Coins?

This has been going on for years. When my sons were teens, at school lunchtime in the school yard there used to be loads of 1p and 2p coins on the ground. I think they didn't like to carry the loose change in their pockets.

I agree and it show the old adage of 'take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves' no longer applies. I think youngsters lack patience and as they cannot buy anything worth having under 50p why bother carrying around a pocketful of change? I used to collect them but they stopped using the charity change converter in Sainsbury's and banks won't take them in large amounts so ........

It used to be 'spend a penny' referring to using public loos and 'a penny for your thoughts', now with inflation neither apply anymore

They can leave them on the floor for me...saying..Find a penny pick it up, all day long l have good luck, pass it on to a friend then my luck will never end

Interesting that they can afford to literally throw away cash! I used to save then spend them and always pick these up now if I see them to spend

I haven’t noticed this myself but I will always pick a penny up if I see one, it’s the old pick a penny good luck rhyme is why I do it.

I used to save them and bank them but the banks have gone now. I have used the coin star in Asda once but takes small commission but not much else to do with them unless you can spend them. I was cross the other day because I used self service check out for one item and all my change was loads of 5p and 2ps. I won’t use them if that is going to happen.

I hate waste. I remember one time taking them to shop to buy bread

I've noticed this too find it strange. But it is more difficult now to use them. I mean shops don't like you giving them lots of change neither do bus drivers. I've got loads of change. Save it for amusements but not been for years. Even pennies you can't use there as don't have 1p machines any more.

When I had my cafe there used to be a lot outside of my cafe so I told them to put them in the donations box

I remember when I was very. Very young.i use to collect half pennies and my great aunt use to save hers for me in a small toffee tin..I only saw her every so often..then I use to feel rich.lol..I still save my coppers now and then use them at the self service check outs..I can feel people burning eyes into my back as I take ages.

I have always saved them, as well as 5p and 10p, must have £300/400 saved up, cash them in near Christmas to pay for presents

I suppose due to inflation you literally can’t get anything for 1 or 2 pence anymore and they’re pretty bulky. You can save them i guess but even the shops don’t want them.

It must be time for them to phase out the coppers - we cant really need them anymore. I cant recall the last time I used anything below a 50p. I really must get round to clearing out my loose coins into one of the machines...

We still collect 1 and 2p coins. My son gets so excited when he gets 1p and 2p coins to put into his piggy bank. They probably don't see the value in them.

I still save them and cash them in once in a while. I wonder how much it actually costs The Royal Mint to produce them

They're not very bright. I wouldn't mind getting those coins.

I always find coppers at work on the floor so I pick them up when I spot one and throw It or them In my jar. Every now and then I bag them into a pound and cash them In. Perfect.

Probably because when we were kids we could buy sweets for 1 or 2 pence can't get anything with them nowadays
