Affording Energy Bills This Winter

Ask a Question

As we start to move into colder weather, are you concerned about being able to afford your energy bills?

Should the government be doing something more to help consumers?

It’s chilly and damp today, I’m resisting the urge to turn the heating on as it costs so much now.

Pjran I've had to have mine on a bit to dry clothes because we have had such a rainy summer 😞

SamGoodship I’ve used the tumbler drier but it’s rarely used. I used to use it most washes but now line dry.

SamGoodship I go to the launderette once a week to dry my clothes. Until last December it was value for money. 50p for 5 minutes, now it's £1.00 for 6 minutes. There is no way I would dry my wet or slightly damped clothing on a radiator.

jam45 you risk causing mould when you dry wet washing on radiators unless you have a dehumidifier.

jam45 That's not an option for me, so I have to dry on radiators or an airer (but run a dehumidifier)

Pjran I don't have space for a tumble drier sadly, but using it would increase energy costs too.

I will be keeping the heating off for as long as possible. We will be wearing lots of layers, Jumpers, dressing gowns to stay warm. Keeping doors closed, if the oven is on I will be leaving the door open afterwards. I will be using as little energy as I can.

MrsCraig ...When I use my oven I always leave the door open after as our kitchen is cold..

My partner, daughter & I will be wearing our Oodies renamed Traitor Gowns after the fabulous programme, they are belted & go right down to our ankles with press studs on one side.Cuffed sleeves & ankles..

They were £30 each on Amazon,I have the red & white, partner & daughter have the blue & white which makes sense as they are mad Sheffield Wednesday fans!

janphoenix51 I always leave the oven door open if I use it, but I don't use the oven that often aswe use the airfryer most of the time. We have Oodie style stuff too. Our son will be living in his lightning mcqueen dressing gown

Jerseydrew I've had to put mine on just to get some clothes dry. It's been such a rauny couple of months that it's been rare I've been able to put clothes on the line.

SamGoodship I refused. I don't have a dryer. I. Only have an airer so my washing stays on that

Jerseydrew Needs must! My husband and daughter go through a lot of clothes with work/outdoor play etc so it was mounting up.

I’m concerned about getting my boiler checked. It’s quite old and just about still going. Luckily my house stays quite warm unless it’s really cold outside.

I do fear for the older people on society. In the past I’ve seen on the news, stories about some dying due to being too cold. I’m worried this could happen a lot this winter

I would imagine everyone would be concerned by their energy bills, we try to be as careful as we can and only put the heating on if absolutely necessary, lucky for us our home is very well insulated and keeps quite warm. I will have my hot water bottle again this year and find that keeps me pretty warm and snug while sitting watching the tv of an evening.

It is terrible, a basic amount of energy should be very cheap so people can be warm and clean,it's disgusting that people are left to die if it goes cold, ina rich country like ours

I am lucky I have a log burner which puts off so much heat. I have been collecting twigs and bits of wood instead of buying kindlers. My son and I go walking about with a bucket

Blankets, hot water bottles. I also font own a dryer. I've an electric airer. I don't use it often but do use it to sped up drying and it helps with heating. We've 3 heaters and we freeze in the morning rather then put it on.
