What Age Would You Give Your Kids a Phone?

Ask a Question

So, nowadays kids get phones and ipads atc at a quite young age. Expecially during lockdown.

Im not against giving children technology but what age would you give your kids their own phone?

When they start secondary school as this is usually when they start commuting on their own, so around 11 or 12. Just a basic mobile phone is needed at that age as a way to keep in touch should an emergency arise.

RegularComper90 I totally agree, a basic phone starting secondary school is perfect. One with the tiny screen that can be used only for texting and phoning.

Parental control doesn't work and when I was at school there were 11-16 year olds who were accessing adult content on their smartphones so I would definitely avoid getting your child one of those till their older

I got my first mobile at 14, but that was a time when it wasn’t as common. These days, I’ve seen babies being pushed around in prams holding a phone (most likely belonging to their parents, I hope). Tbh it depends what the phone is for. When they’re that young, it usually can be used just to distract them, which I don’t think is good. Then again, you never know - you could have a child tech genius, so the earlier they get their hands on tech the better (I know that some kids get into coding and app building at really young ages these days)

Och. It’s what you think etc. Everyone is diff as for the reasons they do. But in my opinion if you’re questioning it : if it doubt. Leave it out!

This is a hard question to answer because everyone has their own opionion. Right now i do not have any kids and imagine i wont for atleast another 5 years at the earliest. As for me i had my first phone when i was about 9/10 i think.

Have a good day

I got my phone when I started secondary school. There was of course always competition of who had the most expensive phone which is what I’m dreading when my son eventually goes secondary school now because phone prices are crazy! I will be giving my son his phone when he starts secondary school

I wouldn't worry about that as most schools have now banned using phones

I got my daughter her first phone around 11 when her little brother was born. I would not buy her an expensive one as don't want people stealing it. She 17 and old enough to look after better one now
