Ancient Coins

Does anyone here collect them and is there a good place to buy genuine ones that are really from 5000 years ago?

I'd love to find an ancient coin...the likelihood of being able to just simply purchase one is probably not something that is going to happen. I believe you could to auctions for these kind of specialist items? Alternatively, you can start your own collection of coins that may improve involve over the years

I think the very first coins date from around 700BC (i.e. only 2,700 years ago) so if you find a genuine one from 5,000 years ago, you'd be minted (or more likely, conned)!

Buy coins at auction from Spinks.

This one, from 1553, costs £175,000

Someone will eventually just 3D print that, if it wasn't already done and ditch paying £175k for it.

i think they should be in museums, so all the people can look and them. Also they usually made from silver or gold so they are valuable.

As Johnny as said you can't get genuine coins from 5,000 years ago but you can get ancient Roman Imperial coins (3rd and 4th century) for as little as £5 on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ancient-Roman-hoard-coin-3rd-4th-century-Imperial-unattributed-nice-1-per-bid-/253702951798 probably for even less if you know someone who does metal detecting. They're quite common.

As an aside, just before you empty your money jar and take the coins to the bank...just check if you have any of these coins. If you do, my commission is 20%! No raiding the kids' money box whilst they are at school!

In 2009, the Royal Mint released just 210,000 50p coins celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Emblazoned with the Kew Gardens Pagoda. It sells for about £150 on eBay.

2008 UNDATED 20P COIN

In November 2008, the Royal Mint misprinted between 50,000 and 250,000 20p pieces by accidentally omitting the date. They are worth about £100.

1983 “NEW PENCE” 2P COIN

In 1983, the Royal Mint accidentally made 2-pence coins with a die used on the reverse from 1971-1981. It read “New Pence” instead of “Two Pence.” They are worth about £700.
