Bar Work Advice?
Help
So, I've just started a new job and one of the roles is bar work. Any of you by any chance have experience working behind a bar or similar? Also, any reccomendations for decent shoes? My current ones are killing be.
Thanks.
In terms of bar work, wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, stinking of booze. It gets easier the longer you do it. Make sure you have flat shoes, but tbh your feet are going to hurt no matter what
I used to be a landlady . The best advice i can give u is be polite smile and the best shoes are flats even though i used to wear heels ... always show another workmate the note u got say 20 or 5 then they can say itwas a higher note coz lots try that out .. if ur serving a short out of an optic hold the bottle when pushing the glass and optic are being used as sometimes if the bottle hasnt been put up straight n it falls out u will probs get blame x good luck x i
let's hope you get lots of tips! was told once by a barman who worked in a fancy cocktail bar in mayfair that his friend was tipped 15k by a very satisfied customer...he was gutted as he wasn't working that day!
My rule with shoes is when I try them on if they do not feel like slippers immediately I don't buy them. Do not buy suede as they will be ruined in 5 mins. Always wear black or dark coloured clothing so when the tap splutters beer over you it won't show. Good luck it's hard work but fun.
I've worked in some rough bars. Prepare for alot of intoxicated people which means alot of abuse, waffling, accusations, flirting, fights, vomiting, haggling for free drinks and lots of guys trying to get your number. Take everything on the chin and don't hold it against them, they're out to have fun with alcohol in their system they're probably lovely people when sober. Service with a smile & choose your words and actions carefully. In some situations I'm sure you're aware but some people(not all) take things the wrong way and short tempered when they've had a drink. The tempo of the job depending if it's a busy establishment can get overwhelming, just like any job but especially with barwork where people possibly will have a short fuse. If someone gets too rowdy or makes you feel very uncomfortable don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Either by a colleague/doorman, providing you're in an establishment that has doorman. It's a doormans job to keep both staff and customers safe (sometimes a few bad eggs slip through the net haha, just like any job role). All in all it will be fun, you'll meet some interesting people and probably some of the best memories/times of your life will be had. Every experience makes us who we are today. I gained alot of confidence when working behind the bar and made a few friends along the way. Wish you all the best of luck in your new job role AnnaAddams
Hi AnnaAddams, I managed a pub for 5 years, I use to wear black skate shoes which are always very comfortable, or Converse. The feet and legs will hurt for a few days whatever you wear because you are standing all day long, but you will soon get used to it Enjoy your new job, I absolutely loved working in a pub, and it's especially fun during the Christmas season
