Best Way to Spend Money Abroad
Ask a Question
How is best to now spend money abroad? Previously I would purchase euros in the UK, however I was recently told by a family member that you can get a better conversion rate when using your card abroad
I tend to take a little bit of local currency, but use a card for roughly two thirds of purchases.
Had some fun in Sweden last Christmas as nearly every shop/restaurant I went in didn't accept cash!
I normally take some cash about 100-150 euros as dependent on the country/island some things you’ll need cash for as they won’t take card, for example I was in Menorca recently and the local buses don’t take card.
To look up the best exchange rates for cash go to money.co.uk/
If you can get yourself a card that has no transaction fees that makes a difference as the usual charge is 2.99% for purchases. Not having the fee then makes using the card better than cash, (unless the exchange rate goes down significantly to when you got your cash) otherwise with the fees it’s about the same if you get a decent rate for the cash
The exchange rate on the card will be Mastercard or Visa daily rate, which you can look up on website.
You can get prepaid cards but I’ve never used them.
