i think you'd need points to cover price of 2 items,then you would still get third free,that's what I was told other year by staff

You can pay with points but you need to cover the price of the 2 items with your points. You would still get the 3rd item free but you can't pay for just one with points as when paying with points it needs to cover the cost of all the items, not just one.

I have a boots card but havent used it for years, i find them too expensive compared to other drug stores , even with the offers

As others have already said yes you can as long as the amount you have on your card covers the two most expensive items that you are buying.

has a Boots advantage card but rarely use it. It way too expensive for most of the items

You can still use your points for sure and it makes a great deal
