The Cat Food Savings Revolution: Is This the End of Expensive Pouches?

Money Saving

Hi all, I have recently got two cats. I am shocked how much cat food is and I hate the waste on the pouches. (I like to recycle). I have been researching cat food in tins and will be sharing some deals. Cat food in tins are half the price compared to pouches.

Is everyone else happy to share their cat food savings? No longer am I happy getting the 84 whiskers deals on Amazon!

We find coshida cat food in 400g tins (the lidl own brand) cheapest personally. Must admit I prefer the pouches as less messy but we had to go over to the tins as we have three cats and the pouches cost a fortune.

Many years ago when Lidl first opened here I got some cheap catfood there in a tin and on opening the can it was obviously some manufacturing defect as not only wasn't the catfood not minced up but it was like a pocket where it was missing the food dye so all the bits of the animals were still intact in all their normal colours instead of brown. It gave me instant understanding of how such cat food was made. It was the most vile thing ever and of course the cat wouldn't eat it, I did put some down. I think the tin originated from either Italy or Spain which I don't think have a great reputation in manufacturing hygiene. I remember reading reports of very poor abattoirs there with regard animal suffering and of course can be quite hot climates too. Anyway completely put me off from buying catfood from Lidl and it was pointless anyway if the cat wouldn't eat it. My cats train me to only buy them the best cat food. It's like once you go up in quality you can never go down again. You set a new base standard for all future food.

I do feel buying meat products from the cheapest supplier is morally wrong. The animal suffering can be horrific and importing from countries with very low production standards who clearly are manufacturing to the lowest possible price is not right. I remember the horse meat scandal where low grade generic meat was imported from Poland I think and was used in many ready meals which many of us would have eaten at the time.

I buy my cats tesco tinned 12 cans for 5 pounds jelly or gravy my younger cat so fussy and will won't fresh ever time she goes to bowl so tins last longer for me I keep them fresh by putting plastic caps back on them. I was going though 4 Pouches a day on the little cat and the big one she would eat the box if had her way so tins are by far cheaper

i would be interested to see the price difference in Whiskas tins and will take a look. Although we always get the boxes of 40. 3 boxes for £22 at Farmfoods.

It depends what kind of cats you have, as some may need a specialist diet - cheap food may screw up their health. One of my cats is mainly on Purina one dry food, and I prefer to give him fresh as his fur gets dull if he eats too much junk. sometimes making food for them can be cheaper, especially if you can get deals from a butcher

My one cat she use to wolf these down now and again when I'd buy them on offer most brands but she liked the more natural made ones even more like hi life etc 🙂

I buy both as my cats are very fussy when it comes to tin food compared to pouches. Even though pouches are more expensive I sometimes prefer to buy them rather than give them tinned food that they will ignore and then it gets wasted. To save money I just try to look out on offers from different stores as well as looking for vouchers online. Some survey companies use to even pay you to buy cat food to get a review in return.

Doesn't it depend on whats available for your cats to eat? for example my cats eat felix as good as it looks but it is a lot harder to find tins of that and also i will miss out on deals and with having 3 it can be expensive so im always looking for deals.

The cat food from lidl and Aldi are cheaper, but I find my cats don’t really enjoy it, so I have to mix it up

I find cat food to be rather expensive compared to dog food, but if you find a store that sells 10kg for a decent low price, that's a deal.

PhilipMarc That could be because cats are more reliant on meat than dogs are. Maybe the manufacturers can get away with bulking dog foods up with more veg or cereal whereas they can't do this so much for cats.

My cat is fussy - so it’s the better, more expensive stuff for him I’m afraid

I have had many cats and none of them will eat the food from tins. Wish they would as so much cheaper. I have tried different varies the only one they did half enjoy was lumps of meat in gravy, they ate the gravy and left the lumps
