How Do Cats Know How to Use a Litter Tray?

Ask a Question

Asking the important questions here. My friend told me they don't need training, they just know how to go?? Anyone out there got a better explanation? I'm not going to google this.

I think they do need training to go on it. They can smell themself once they go on it and just know 😂 either that or my cat is dumb 🤔

They instinctively go to somewhere they can scratch and cover up their business. 😊 After going once or twice return to the area. So the cat litter is an indoor replica of what they would find outside....

Probably why the gravel, wooden bark chips, and soil that is in my garden is often used by cats...!! . 😕

Just to add my cat was a stray cat. Never used a litter tray, but instinct told him to go there as the litter was something he could scratch. 😊

They instinctively go to an area where they know they’re able to cover up their doings - so when it’s their first time, they’ll inspect the litter and realise it’s a good place they can bury something, and so they do that.In the wild, they cover or bury to mask their doings so they don’t get preyed upon or targeted. Domestic cats still have that instinct to protect themselves. All my cats have not needed any training, and just go to the litter tray and know it’s their toilet
