Ask a Question
Hi just wondering if anyone has any good cheap recipes they would like to share with everyone, that could help us all out as things are getting harder with the price of everything going up all the time
I like to make meatballs in tomato sauce. If I'm lucky I get hold of Morrisons meatballs (reduced, the frozen are too fatty) add an onion, peppers, mushrooms (frozen are good) Aldi's cheap bologneise sauce and some boloneise packet power add some water and cook in the oven for about 2hrs then add pasta My slow cooker died

kate1310 most frozen veg are very nice. We'd rather have fresh mushrooms but the frozen ones are ok and handy too.I also make a sausage casserole with Aldi sausage casserole mix, onions and peppers.Chuck it all together in an oven proof dish for about 1/2 hours depending on your oven.
plinkyplonk going to buy some frozen veg try it will buy that sausage casserole mix to thank you
Sorry me again.Aldi's packet savoury rice and pasta with sauce packets are quick, easy, tasty and cheap too.
PfsBest if you pick any green bits off the bread first. Although not an actual recipé this (which includes sugar) might be of interest. www.examinerlive.co.uk/lifestyle/denis-kilcommons-origins-pobs---7945628
davidstockport your a a northerner and I'm sure you would have had milk pobs before. I was a northern lad myself so I've definitely had it
Pfs I recall in the years following WW2 that for many it was all that some people could get or afford- things were very hard. Pobs were especially favoured by those who'd lost all their teeth on the days their husband or wife had the use of the dentures (very soft on the gums).
davidstockport I had them many times in the 70s I was living in tyldesley at the time not a million miles from Stockport
We make our own sauces, tomato, cheese, curry. Easy to do. We freeze freeze heels from bread and then make breadcrumbs and make stuffing. We cook a lot of things from scratch. Otherwise I use the air fryer to cook pretty much everything or the slow cooker. Get some cheap beef chunks, make stew in the slow cooker, cheap chicken legs/thighs and cook in the slow cooker. Any leftovers are eaten the next day or frozen.
Surprisingly Supermarket's own brand frozen veg are much cheaper than fresh veg ( and no better or worse than Birds Eye etc) . Likewise frozen mince or sausages .
When you cook a dish make it up as you go along , but be sure to take a note of what you put in ( eg 1tsp curry powder , 1 tsp chilli powder etc , etc ) Then when it comes right you can repeat it .
If you "over spice " a dish you can calm it down with tomato sauce , or even baked beans . Cheap Supermarket own brands work just as well as branded (and far more expensive options ) .
Golfforall this is a great idea to write down what iam using aw and just put tomorrow sauce or beans in if its to spicy brilliant tip thank you
Tomato pasta bake is a good cheap meal - easy and filling, always have a jar of pasta bake sauce in the cupboard
Maybe not for this time of year but I always batch cook soup to have during the winter months with some nice crusty bread.
easy peasy and cheap meal to make it a red or yellow lentil curry. It's very nutritious and once you have the basic spices can make a very filling meal. Add 'on offer' veg to a ke it more substantial.
Not a recipe but be careful when buying pre-packed fruit and veg. Go and weigh it first and see the difference in price the store is asking for it, you will be amazed how much packaging is.
eyeballkerry never thought of that I always buy all my fruit and veg pre packed going to just pick my own next time thanks for the good advice
kate1310 Next time you try it, grab the bananas for example that say £1 for a bag and see what price you get when you weigh them.
eyeballkerry I will I have never used the weights in supermarket but definitely going to start thanks again
I sometimes do some cheap ramen noodles with egg. Just boil some water over the stove, add the noodles with the spice packet and any other spices (hot chili powder is my go to) and crack the eggs in. Let it cook until done. You can sprinkle some chopped spring onion on top for some aesthetic. Its perfect for freezing weather and you get some soup to drink at the end.
Macaroni cheese is nice. Cook the macaroni- put in oven dish. Pour in a little milk (about quarter up the dish). Sprinkle lots of grated cheese and bake for 15 mins then brown under grill. Serve with bread if liked.
