Childrens Clothing Advert is Removed as It Was Said to Contain a Racist Slur

In the News

When i first saw this article i read it at least three times before i realised what it said

I initially thought how can an advert for childrens trousers be offensive ?

Is it the word trousers, hem, woven, i just could not see the problem

Then it clicked, they had put knee grow in reference to the style of pants that children grow into

Someone spotted this and said it was a racial slur , as it spelt out a similar word with another meaning

If anyone could think this was done deliberately, especially at a big company such as Sainsburys then they need their heads testing

Now they have profusely apologised and are removing the advert !!

I have seen worse more deliberate things, for example the company FCUK , it is not the swear word but more closely resembles one than the advert does to racism, but no one has complained about this and they have been trading for years

What are your thoughts on this ?

Really knee grow got a whole adver shut down, literally describing the product. I personally think this is where PC has gone too far. It's two words describing the thing it's innocent many words have double meanings and many things have done worse

wonderingsoul And it was just one person who complained W

What makes it worse was sainsburys grovelling about it , and they had done nothing wrong

wonderingsoul I am fed up of all this snowflakery and people being offended by anything just to achieve a 5 seconds of fame. Also if some of you reading this, you must be racists yourself even thinking that way about kids fashion garment. What about rap videos where n words are used so often.

Also ban Spanish people who are using that word to describe the colour.

I have never heard of knee grow, would have understood leg grow better. But whatever, the whole thing is pathetic and were I head of Sainsbury I would never have apologised let alone take the ad down!

They go on about the surge in mental health problems these days and I understand that for youngsters it is a lot to do with social media. However, for older folk like me it is constant suppressed rage when I see/hear things like this. I can't remember the last time I had more than one peaceful day without feeling sad, angry, amazed at the way this world is going.

Lynibis the description is reinforced knee(thicker material to prevent holes)

Grow hem (a hem thar can be let down as the child grows)

It's just when it was printed the 2 'offending words' were next to each other which made ot look like it said something else. Punctuation is important ppl

If it said grow hem, reinforced knee it wouldn't have been an issue. Careless yes, racist? No

Not knee grow as people are trying to make out

Would never have thought of it being a racist slur. To be fair I wouldn't be expecting it from a company like Sainsbury's so wouldn't look for it. Now it's been pointed out I can see why someone's got upset as it sounds racist even though it's not

Sorry but I had to post it as I found it on Reddit and think it's hilarious. www.reddit.com/r/meme/comments/g1rf3i/knee_grow/

Stores should immediately renamed all digging equipment and don't forget about when you play cards.

Jokes aside, kids clothes prices will be over the roof with all these additional changes. Great I ordered some, but will there be a recall from Sainsbury's ?

Should I demand stores to remove white rolls from the shelves? I am feeling extremely offended with these products. Oh and white toilet rolls. That's too much. I need a break. 🤯😜🎣

Taken totally out of context, I could not consider this to be done even accidentally on purpose by Sainsburys. No one stopped Barrymore saying all wight as a catch phrase. It beggars belief.

It took me ages to realise what you were talking about. This is unbelievable and its getting worse all the time. Some people just seem to find fault about anything. They need to get a life.

Do they not have people at these advertising companies that check and double check if anything could possibly be misconstrued in anyway? Or is it a cynical advertising ploy to get into the news.

Time people get a grip and find something that really matters in the world to complain about rather than 2 simple words being taken the wrong way. It’s no wonder world mental health illnesses have risen so much in last few yrs when there’s always someone offended by the simple things in life. Wonder how we all got through back in the day. I’m just glad there was no social media in my childhood cos it’s the ruin of kids today

Change it around to grow hem, reinforced knee. Problem solved people are really looking for problems when there is just a careless mistake
