Council Slammed for 'Outrageous' Scheme Asking for Volunteers to Clear Weeds

In the News

This council has a nerve asking for volunteers to clear weeds from the streets of Brighton and Hove

They even called the people 'weed warriors' to make them sound like heroes instead of unpaid council workers

This problem has arisen because all toxic chemicals have been banned from 2019 and cannot be used to kill weeds, and nothing else seems to be working

The weeds have caused accidents with people tripping over them causing broken bones and animals becoming sick due to grass seeds , all this is probably just as bad if not worse than using the chemicals

I’m sure there will many public minded people who will help. After all they will be doing something good for their community.

Pjran Thats true P, but the council should be doing this, that's what our council tax goes towards

telmel I know that’s what our council tax has paid for in the past but if they get some volunteers then that money can go towards essential services like social care.

Pjran You would hope that would happen P but going on past experience i would not count on that happening

I think we will need to imagine that weeds are the new flowers 🌻

Pjran You're quite correct, unfortunately there are some people who won't do anything unless there is some cash incentive. Fortunately there are still some still willing to give some of their time without monetary recompense.

Perhaps those opposed to this kind of thing would rather pay extra council tax, or live in areas where weeds abound.

davidstockport my husband has been clearing weeds on the road outside and so do a couple of our neighbours. Maybe those fit to work but claiming benefits should do community work.

I understand that it's the council's responsibility but l regularly hoe the weeds in my road from my house and the neighbour's, both side x4. I'm a neat freak and enjoy seeing a before and after satisfaction

Many councils are spending more money on debt interest than services. Everyone can see that industry has shrunk, retailers have disappeared from the high street and we have been running a huge trade deficit with the EU for years as well as paying them many billions per year the and on top of that imported more expensive food from the EU than is available outside the EU. We are a much poorer country with huge debts but people somehow think they can live to the same standard they used to. It looks awful when the high street is empty of shop but also that reflects a huge drop in income for the local council. People spend huge sums of money on Amazon but Amazon don't even pay proper tax in the UK because their taxation base is in Europe and we have a free trade agreement with Europe. We are a economically moronic people both the government and individuals sadly on self-destruct. Returning to a trading surplus and living within our means should be the number one priority but its not even mentioned on political debates as far as I can see. We just get moronic personality politics rather than focus on restoring the economy.

Isn't that what council tax is for. Also not always weeds. It's just growing in the wrong place

To be fair, I think councils simply don't have the money. It's not a bad idea, if we all took a bit more pride in keeping our towns and cities in a good condition it would be great for everyone, but I'm not sure the community spirit is there anymore.

Increase Council tax and rents and then get someone else to do the job for free. Not daft.I'm against using chemicals tho.Salt kills weeds don't need RoundUp it's grim.

I know my view will not be popular but I have always thought how nice it would be if everyone took responsibility for their own frontage. Too often we take the attitude, 'that's what I pay my taxes for' or 'it isn't my job' etc. But just think how nice the world could be if we all did our bit without being asked.

Lynibis l concur wholeheartedly, l have pride in where l live, l also have a saying that.. I would love people to keep things as tidy as l would, rather than how they would like them to be as l know lots of people believe a tidy person has a boring life. Nope we're just respectful etc.. now l will probably be told my view is not popular, but l have broad shoulders and certain people's views are as the saying goes.. Water off a ducks back 🦆

What does the council workers who mow the grass do if weed killing is not included?

Councils are stuck in that they keep being given new responsibilities which are rarely properly funded, and then are given strict rules on how much they can raise through the council tax. They are then forced to go to central government for handouts which they have to put in bids for - a process which is very expensive with no guarantee they will get results. All of this means that services which can be cut back will be. Asking locals to take on more jobs as a public service is a good way as quite a few people will be happy to help out.

I always clear the weeds in the gutters outside of my home, if everyone done their bit the world would look a better place.
