Do You Cut Your Own Hair?

Ask a Question

I’ve probably only trimmed my own hair once or twice, so I have never done a full hair cut myself. However, I remember my mum cutting my hair as a kid to save money. Is this something that people still do?

My mum used to cut my hair when I was younger and I cut my own hair, have done for years. I don't actually like going to the hairdressers. I hate the feeling of their fingers on my scalp, so only go when absolutely necessary.

I remember trimming my own fringe as a child so I never cut my own hair but used to let a friend do it as a teenager. She's now a hairdresser and cuts it for £10

I deeply regretted the times i attempted to cut my own hair thinking it must be easy 😂 I think I would cut my own child’s hair (if I had one) though... my mum is 54 years old and has never been to a salon, she gets my perfectionist dad to cut her hair or she got me to do it when I was a teenager (that went wrong for her when I said “ooops” at the first cut which cut 9 inches off her hair 😂)

Aw that’s so sweet! And it’s good your dad has attention to detail, as most women would probably not their husbands style their hair, let alone a cut! Lol

hspexy to be fair, she has dead straight hair and just wants it cut in a straight line so its not rocket science - although i still messed it up 😂

My friend has cut her own hair for years and does a pretty good job. On the other hand my mum used to cut our fringes when we were little..... oh man going to primary school with buck teeth national health glasses and a diagonal fringe was not ideal 😂😂😂

I have trimmed my hair before many times before and it turned out great. My mum has also trimmed my hair a couple of times before. My way of thinking is that if I can save money by cutting my hair at home and doing a good job than it is worth it for me. I find hair salons more expensive.

Yes hair salons are expensive, and if you are not really into the chit chat, it can be quite an uncomfortable experience. I had a friend in my teens who loved working at one as she loved the gossiping. I guess it can be therapeutic for some

I’m quite happy cutting my hair, it’s a simple bob shape. In fact I’ve at last persuaded my husband to trim the back making sure it’s level. I started doing my own hair a few years ago after having to go home and correct a salons mistake, so obviously saved pounds. I also colour it myself.

Ah yes, there are definitely times the hair dresser doesn’t quite get it right, and it’s annoying that you paid for it. My cousin had a dye job go wrong and she had to complain quite a bit to get her money back. The problem was a dye job can’t really be corrected, so she had to live it out for about a month

hspexy oh that’s awful. I just don’t like going to the hairdresser nowadays with mobility’s problems, move to the sink then move back for the stylist. It takes me time and I feel guilty making them wait.

Pjran I understand. Especially as it’s probably quite a fairly fast paced environment with lots of eyes watching. Hair cuts are quite private affairs for me. It’s not really something I do for show and tell

I cut my sons, brothers and mothers but i am a qualified hairdresser/barber 🤣 I go to the hairdressers though, i used to cut my own but its more relaxing having someone do it for you 🤣

Lol indeed it is. When I get my hair cut in Asia, they usually give you a little head massage as well, so that’s always a bonus - well worth the £2-£5 that I’d spend at the salon 😜

hspexy its really cheap out there aswell isnt it. I saw a video on facebook of a man out there and he had a haircut, shave, head, shoukder and arm massage and i think it was like £5 alltogether. Couldnt even get a haircut for that in the uk 🤣

I have trimmed my fringe many times as a teen and my mum used to regularly trim my hair to but now I ask my sister who's a trained hairdresser to cut it for me

Set the trimmer to 3mm and done in fives mins. I used to pay plenty at a barber. I must have saved hundreds over the past ten years or more of doing my own 🙂

Lol ah yes, men probably have to go far more frequently to maintain their hair - I had a colleague who went every 4 weeks to the one he liked - travel money and £8-9 spent each time

hspexy Those with short hair do have it easy unless you want to keep it short. I thankfully suit no style, just the same all over my round bonce. I think it cost me £8-9 for a head shaver from argos a decade ago and have used it ever since.

I have never cut my own hair, I think I would be too scared of making a mess of it. But understand when you have lots of kids that it could be worth considering.
