Should Doctors Get a 12% Pay Rise?
Ask a Question
Should doctors get a 12% pay rise?
Do you think they should find a compromise so they can stop further damage to the NHS and waiting times from strike action?
Yes definitely they should they put the hours in get abuse I think paramedic should get it too
SamGoodship but then again I believe the fire service should get more money as they are risking there life's for someone else
I think they should get a fair pay rise. Ultimately, there is a bigger issue if doctors going on strike can impact the NHS to the extent it has. Speaks of issues behind the scenes that no one seems to want to address.
Consumer Yes it's a shame the amount of appointments that have had to be cancelled/rearranged leaving people in pain etc.
The problem with all this is with inflation everyone is feeling the squeeze and some would argue doctor’s already earn a high wage (not my opinion) and aren’t feeling the squeeze as much as others at the bottom of the wage scale. All staff in the nhs are essential and it couldn’t run without it. If they give doctors 12% then other staff may start to strike to get the same then where does it end.
Whole UK is in crisis not just Doctor, if everyone starts asking for rise who is paying it, common people tax
sunnymalladi Do you think doctors should ask for a pay rise less than 12% then?
I think they should take money off GPS and give it to the junior doctors, GP'S earn way too much as it is
No they shouldn’t!! Some doctors are earning over £100k and to expect more is outrageous!
Maybe pay Nurses and Paramedics more!?…you know, them who do the most work and get the most abuse.
Maybe if there wasn’t so much money wasted on unnecessary managerial positions and woke nonsense roles, then the NHS wouldn’t be so broken!
jms19 I have no idea what your role is within the NHS, but I tip my hat to you and thank you for your service to the nation.
But I totally understand that it’s not just black and white, there’s many reasons why the NHS is in such a state.
Not forgetting that the NHS was created back when the population was much smaller and people lived shorter lives. Plus the strain is increased due to mass immigration to our shores too.
Staff shortages and frontline staff doing more than their job role is also a major factor.
Plus I believe that the day to day running of wards and departments has taken a nosedive since they got rid of Matrons….they could be cantankerous old battleaxes but they certainly got things done.
All the best to you and thanks again
no i dont think they should get a pay rose at all. a large majority are contractors. the pay structure needs to change so cotmractors are paid. less and permanent get more
No ……
1 they earn enough
2 if you gave them 12% you still won’t get seen
3 next yr they’ll want more just like everyone else
- regular work on top of/as well as their work for the NHS, so I don't think they should have more pay.
kevanstewart I am not sure junior doctors can afford their own practices and equipment to work on the side, they often do 70 hour weeks so wouldn't have time. The consultants on the other hand nearly all do private work and spend lots of time on the golf course. I have also heard of them 'acquiring' nhs stuff for their private practices!
No I don’t think they should get it as the UK Government has altered their pension to give them more than the rest of us. They should be stopped doing private work till they cut the waiting list.
In general the private hospitals don’t have full time employed doctors or nurses they all come from the NHS, and it is funny there it no waiting to see a doctor or treatment you should be asking why.
The pay rise will cause more government borrowing and make us much poorer. I think at the moment they are borrowing about £1 in every £10 for services. We are already servicing huge debts. The UK is very uncompetitive now which is why we have so little industry and we import so much. Often its cheaper to have a foreign holiday rather than a holiday in the UK such is the value of sterling. As mad as it sounds we need to be lowering our wages to be more competitive. We need to get to the state where we can't afford to import and instead create jobs within our own country because it will be cheaper to produce here than import. Many doctors have huge wages and fantastic benefits like generous pensions that they can take before retirement age.
We need to get a lot more realistic than idealistic.
We have become such an economically moronic country. You need wealth creating industries to pay for services like the NHS as we lose those industries services like the NHS obviously need to be reduced in scope. It's horrible but its better than building up huge debts that could take 50 years or more to pay off. We should live within our means.
I mean who asks for a 35% pay increase it was such a unrealistic starting point.
Doctors are being worked harder and harder and having to fill in the staffing gaps more and more and the government expects more and more patients to be seen. If they had invested properly in training more doctors over the last twelve years then a lot of the issues we now have will have been averted. I tend to agree that senior consultants do earn good wages - but they can all earn a lot more if they just went private, and there are just not enough doctors coming up through to replace those that leave. End result we will all end up having to go private - which funnily enough is probably what many in the government actually want to happen.
I don't think they should. A lot of consultants also have a private practice in addition to their 'full time' job at the hospital so their hospital job can't be too taxing for them to have 2 jobs. I couldn't manage 2 jobs. I can't get an appointment with my GP for 3 weeks then it's a telephone with Pharmacist. So no to the pay rise.
Seems that many people have joined in on the bandwagon of going on strike over the last year or so. You should know what you are letting yourself in for when you accept a job.
But how about a compromise. They get a payrise only if they start seeing more patients face to face again.
Definitely not. Try to see a doctor & you will only see a practice nurse. Very rare to actually see a doctor.
Most definitely. Try doing their job. I work in a school so know dealing with vulnerable and abusive people is hard. Anyone who works in the environment of stressed out people knows how hard and stressful it is
No. It's one of the best paid professions in the country. We should be paying higher wages across the board. Wages have stagnated in this country for over a decade, with inflation exceeding any rise in wages.
The issue we have now is that only industries which largely affect the whole system have a voice. If NHS workers strike, everyone suffers, if transport workers strike, everyone suffers, if education workers strike, everyone suffers, if royal mail workers strike, everyone suffers. So these sectors are the only ones where industrial action actually forces the government to act. Everyone else has to put up with low pay - on top of limited access to services as a result of these strikes.
All that being said. We do need to give incentives for people who are educated here to stay here and work as a professional. Because right now, a large number of people are going to live/work abroad after getting their education. And why wouldn't they?
FearLoathing Lots of doctors come from other countries. While we were in the EU the free movement of people meant to save on training we just imported many doctors and many of those on strike are not invested in the UK economy. A quick google shows it is about 1/3rd of doctors and this is a huge drain on the UK economy if they export a lot of their wages. It adds to our sterling deficit with other countries. It was always utter madness to join the EU for so many economic reasons.
Even 17.5% would be acceptable in my view, half way between their 35% demand. I think the government is out of order not meeting with our medics and sorting this out. Not many professions were at risk of death during Covid while helping others.
Give them what they want. FUND THE NHS. PROTECT ITS STAFF. Tax the billionaires and we can all enjoy a fully funded NHS.
comriegold There are 171 billionaires in the UK and that figure is falling. Such billionaires may earn lets say £60 million a year. They currently pay 45p in the pound on their income but lets say we change it to 50p in the pound. That will probably mean some billionaires will leave the UK but 5p x 60 million x 171 is only £500 million. It's significant amount of money for sure but a drop in the ocean compared to how much the NHS spends and we wouldn't get that anyway because I'm sure a small percentage of billionaires would leave the UK if there was a higher tax and base their tax location elsewhere.
We have to be realistic we need a complete overhaul of our economy and part of that is returning to a trading surplus which means much higher sales taxes on many goods focused on those mainly imported. The general population has caused the damage to the economy and we need to change their habits by making many goods like cars and foreign holidays much more expensive.
You can't keep giving blood transfusions to a patient with an open wound who is losing blood you have to sort out the wound.
BonzoBanana how many companies avoid paying tax ? How many billions is lost via tax avoidance.
An overhaul of tax avoidance first then consider the overhaul of the NHS.
Personal health responsibility needs to be implemented, that I agree with. The amount of morbidly obese adults and children in this country is incredible.
If you've ever worked in the NHS you'd understand just how hard the staff work. Regulation of NHS managers also needs to start now
comriegold Frontline NHS staff work very hard I'm sure generally. There is a huge amount of management in the NHS that is un-necessary and the NHS has been terrible for damaging the UK's economy in the products they use and the amount of staff they have imported. The logistics of the NHS is terrible. The couriers who transfer blood by motorcycle for example from what I have seen are mainly on BMW motorcycles, the least reliable motorcycle brand with the highest maintenance costs and the highest purchase price. You could make the case for Triumph motorcycles as some are made in the Uk or just go for the most reliable motorcycles which are typically Japanese. Why on earth did they buy BMWs? The NHS should be under some directive to operate in the interests of this country to help towards returning us to a trade surplus and hopefully lead to bringing down our horrific debts which are over £2.5 trillion in government debt alone. About £4k for every home is just paying the interest of our debts at the moment. A staggering amount.
Obviously any tax being avoided is a priority but you have to tackle the underlying issues with the economy which is a trading deficit. With a trading deficit we built up huge debts and lost a huge amount of assets.
It is the general population that are doing the damage to the economy. They are importing far too much. You have people buying a new imported car every 3 years and taking many foreign holidays this is what is causing a huge amount of damage to the economy as the government keeps borrowing to replace that money in the economy which is why we are at £2.5 trillion or more of debt plus we have made huge payments to the EU about £7 billion net a year for 40 years or more and ran a large trading deficit with Europe. We are a country on economic self-destruct and have been for about 40 years or more.
Well I've had my knee replacement cancelled 6 times and if this pay rise is for GP's then absolutely No
When you think a plumber/gas fitter earns more than a doctor then yes they do deserve a pay rise but not consultants.
I definitely don't think GPs should get a rise, I've had to wait three and half weeks for an appointment. When I go to the doctors, the waiting room is always empty.
