Are eBay & Gumtree Things of the Past?

Ask a Question

I’ve noticed recently that less and less items are listed on Gumtree but Facebook marketplace seems to become more and more popular.. now it seems eBay is less popular and Depop is the new “fashionable” selling app.. has anyone else found this to be the case?

I think it depends on your age and what you are selling. Depop is targeted at under 30’s in my opinion. EBay can be quite expensive when you consider their fee and PayPal fees. I like Shpock and Gumtree but also use Facebook marketplace for larger items.

I’m 25 but only just discovering Depop 🤣 my step son is saying this proves I’m getting old.. Depop has the same fees as eBay, 10% of every sale plus PayPal fees.. i’ve not tried Shpock 🤔

sarahgreen15 E-bay fees used to be10%, these days they are more like 15% plus of course as you mentioned paypal fees, it's always best to try and list your items when the £1 promotions are on.

I’ve noticed that so many things on eBay are from China even when I click UK only. I don’t mind but I’m struggling to buy from there from genuine Uk shops and sellers as they get lost in the searches.

Never heard of Depop.

The thing with Facebook marketplace is there are no fees and you can see what you get before handing the payment over. Some things are a bit more niche and are better sold on ebay - I always wait for the £1 final value promos to sell anything but Paypal takes quite a cut too. I like ebay for the outlets and always get great bargains from Superdry and Argos clearance with the free delivery. The nectar point bonuses are great too as I love collecting extra Nectar points!

I still post stuff on gumtree but I find that I have much more success with fb marketplace so I sometimes don't bother with gumtree. I've never used ebay as the fees are too high and I don't like depop.

I don’t bother with gumtree either anymore, i’ve not sold anything on there for years, despite advertising. matketplace seems to be much more successful. I avoided eBay for years but I have had some success - Depop fees are the same as eBay, but I am having more success selling on there.

sarahgreen15 I have posted stuff on gumtree recently and had no success so I don't tend to bother now. I've only sold one item on gumtree in the last 6 months, whereas everything else I've sold has been on marketplace. I don't use ebay and depop because of the fees. For some items I'm selling by the time I've paid the fees I would be just as well having given it away for free! I've been tempted to try shpock and vinted but never got round to it.

I buy & sell online very frequently. Ebay is my favourite. Fees are high when you take into account paypal fees too, but Ebay are going to be stopping paypal payments over the next year & managing all payments themselves so this will likely reduce fees. I have had some great bargains on Depop. My couple of experiences buying from Vinted have not been so good.

That’s interesting, I’m trying to sell a load of old football shirts for my partner and i downloaded Vinted to check it out and didn’t understand why anyone would use any other app if Vinted dont take any fees.. I sold one item so far, but I don’t like having to wait to get payment - especially for postage..

eBay is charging just what PayPal did at the moment, seems very unfair

Sarahvwomble Yeah that was a little sneaky of them. The whole managed payments thing was originally suggested would reduce fees, It's obvious now it was a way for them to gain what PayPal was getting. In fairness I have used Vinted a fair bit more since I left the above comment & am beginning to prefer it over eBay recently.

I think I get better communication in Gumtree. I also tend to find more bargains where as in Facebook if I find a bargain it seems to have poor quality.

I don't use eBay for second hand stuff but they are cheaper stuff compared to Amazon and I was looking for a very specific cable a while ago and I could only find it on eBay.

I could believe this due to the fact eBay and PayPal fees for sellers are actually based on the item price and postage.

so many people get scammed on gumtree, and eBay has rubbish to zero customer service, they’re bound to lose popularity. I use neither

I think it depends on products, I still use eBay and haven't bought anything from Facebook Marketplace or Depop. I think each are good for different things, Facebook Marketplace mostly for things you can pick up locally as far as I've seen, I don't imagine I'd use this much but I would consider using Depop if I was specifically looking for clothes

if you don’t mind me asking, how? Its all done through PayPal so you should be able to get your money back easily, same as eBay? I’ve only recently started using it but I’ve had no issue, everyone is reviewed and the money is secure..

sarahgreen15 The woman sent me a an empty box. I ordered some earrings. So instead she sent me an empty earring box and gift bag. She has tracking information so it’s been a lot harder to claim. Luckily I found that the woman as stole pictures from someone on eBay and is also trying to sell the same earring to others.

Ive opened a case with PayPal. But Depop customers services are terrible and are still allowing her to sell the same (none existing earrings to others) x

LeanneWard that’s crazy! I can’t believe people like that exist.. just horrible! Sorry to hear that, I hope PayPal get it sorted quickly for you - I’ve found in the past that PayPal deal with cases quicker if you phone them and speak to them x

Wrongly or rightly I have always used Amazon. I find it so easy to use. However, I tried eBay recently to look for something Amazon did not have and found it like a virtual jungle. I was on UK site (.co.uk) but so many prices were in dollars and 'shipping' prices were horrendous. I will not be revisiting.

That’s strange, you can change your settings on eBay to only show UK sellers and items, but sometimes all the abroad sellers come up when there are simply no UK sellers / for that particular product.. i‘ve always found amazon to be more expensive than eBay and the shipping is usually free on eBay but expensive on amazon 🤔

sarahgreen15 how strange. I wanted a poster that cost just over £11 but shipping was over £6! It obviously came from America as we do not use that term, usually delivery or p&p. Redbubble was same with high shipping cost.

sarahgreen15 PS I don't have Prime but never pay delivery as my orders are always over £20 sent by Amazon or my granddaughter orders for me who has prime.

eBay is still cheaper than Amazon for pretty much everything. It's annoying because I have around 60 quid worth of Amazon vouchers to spend. I have noticed a shift in pivate sales to the modern equivalent of classifieds eg. Facebook Marketplace. Schpock is mostly a waste of space and always has been but still somehow exists.

I'd also recommend Preloved. I just sold an Xbox on there pretty quickly - and it is free for most things.

As a company I detest ebay and the sooner they die the better. I used to love the old yahoo auctions which were free but ebay bought it purely to close it down and reduce their competition. Now facebook marketplace is getting big ebay fees are often on offer. I still use ebay for specialist items but wish they didn't exist however I can't see them disappearing. I have a lot of older computer hardware to sell that is collectable around the world and that has to be sold on ebay realistically.

Yahoo Auctions still exist, but only in Japan. It's a pretty big deal over there.

I've noticed over the past few months that items don't seem to be selling on eBay like they used to.

I could usually guarantee to shift unwanted competition prizes etc. within a few days, but I've had stuff knocking around on there for months.

Haven’t used gumtree and eBay for such a long time.

Vinted is good, I prefer that.

Have Depop also, but they charge fees.

I still really like eBay for little low value things. I think it can't be beaten for that. I've never liked selling on there as the fees are always more than I anticipated. Vinted has been great for shifting baby clothes, I made about £200 with very little effort. My husband has sold a few large items on gumtree and made a decent amount of money. I think Facebook marketplace is the future though, much better value when you don't have to pay fees or postage costs.

I've listed over 40 items on eBay and will be listing more as I want to sell off everything I have to make space, and I don't want it anymore.

While there's Amazon, Shpock, Preloved, Gumtree, Onbuy, Facebook Marketplace, etc, you can't beat eBay.

Also, by listing it, eBay allowed me to change to Managed Payments and I used my Revolut card for it. Just to have it separate from the other banks.

Used to use eBay a long time ago but got fed up with the fees. Went to Depop and similar experience to eBay. I now use Vinted. No fees at all, good experience so far.

Tried marketplace on Facebook for furniture and that was alright, had a few potential buyers who lived hundreds of miles away wanting them but when said where I lived (even in the description I put where I live) they never bothered, which is understandable.

I like Vinted, sold quite a lot on there and had a pleasant experience so far.

Yes FB market place so much easier and free. Once you sell the item and it is collected all done, no waiting for a dodgy buyer to claim not receive. I sold my last house on FB saving me a fortune and no estate agents to put up with. ( sorry any estate agents )

I've heard good things about the FB Marketplace, but my issue is that it requires a Facebook account.

Even with all the privacy options, it still shows the ability to become "friends" with people I may or may not know. They could just make the Marketplace its own individual website.

This is the link, right?

https://m.facebook.com/marketplace/

Says unavailable for me, but eh, whatever.
