What's Causing the Egg Shortage in the UK?
Ask a Question
There are less eggs all across the UK I think we should talk about it.
I'm lucky I don't have eggs that much but I buy some off my dad's neighbor they have chickens
Are we talking chicken/duck eggs? We certainly aren't short on Easter eggs
The recent events of avian flu have meant that birds can no longer completely free range, they had to take extra precautions, many of the birds had to be relocated or sadly killed because they had avian flu, it takes a lot to recover from this. This is why a month or so ago many stores were limiting the amount of eggs per customer.
They also had issues on how long they could keep them in such confined spaces before they were allowed to be classed as 'Free Range' so some poultry places made the decision not to sell them as 'caged hens'
The Gov website added just 5 days ago that 'Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in commercial poultry on 31 March 2023'
Not had any issues getting eggs. Noticed there are less on the shelves but still manage to get them when we need them.
I am luckily enough to have my own chickens but have heard and seen the lack of eggs in store. The main supermarkets are not paying the farmers enough. If you shop in smaller stores you will find eggs.
The farm shop I get my eggs from hasn't had any in ages. Had to resort to supermarket ones.
So I didn't realise there was a egg shortage especially not after going every evening for week to teach clap the over 10 000 chickens onto perches few months bk learnt 2 things I can pick chickens up and by they ain't half smart
1 section had completely learnt wt to do after 1night
The reason for the shortage for a lot of products in the main supermarkets is because they are not paying the producers of the products enough. If you go to local small supermarkets they have the products because they are paying what the goods are worth.
To add to reasons already given,a lot of farmers are abandoning egg production simply because supermarkets won't pay them a realistic price. Feed prices have increased because of brexit and energy costs and the cost of purchasing new birds has also increased.
I think the eggs price is better now ( in the supermarkets) because now it's the normal price.
