Do You Ever Think Actors Can Do Accents Properly

Ask a Question

I love the TV programme Vera, I think Brenda Blethyn does a realistic North East accent, however my friend who comes from that part of the world can't watch the programme it because she thinks the accent is dreadful.

I am currently watching Escape from Pretoria with Daniel Radcliffe on Prime and I am finding the South African accent difficult, not sure if it's any reflection on his acting ability or the fact that I just dislike the accent in general as it is so harsh sounding

What do you think about accents

I don't mind actors putting on accents if they do them well, but I think there are very few actors who actually manage to do an authentic accent from wherever it is their character is supposed to be from.

Americans trying to do British accents is the one that tends to irritate me, as most sound awful. I think Johnny Depp can do a decent British accent, but I'm struggling to think of many others that can.

I think some English actors can do a great American accent, when I watched the Wire I didn't realise that Idris Elba was English

beccatavender The thing though Becca is that although you think his American accent is OK it's probable that many Americans won't. I can do a few accents but wouldn't expect to convince a person who used that accent naturally.

I'm from the west of Scotland and must say that I agree with your friend, her accent is terrible, just like 95% of actors who try to use the Scottish accent

Im from the North East & as much as I love Vera, the accent could use a little work.

Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders does a good job of a brummie accent despite being Irish. Tbf all the cast in that show are brilliant at accents except Adrian Brody his accent as Italian gangster Luca was cringeworthy.

Getsome 😂 How have I not seen that before? Me & OH are howling 😂😂. I concur Brenda Blythen does a steller job! Lol.

He somehow managed to roll bad examples of Geordie, Scottish & Irish Gypsy all into one. Brilliant!!! 😂 Totally sending this too some people.

I think Martin Compston does really well in Line of Duty, and i love watching Vera think she is good but could maybe improve slightly

I watched Escape From Pretoria a few nights ago, and didn't particularly take much notice of DR's accent. I do know from personal experience that actors will often be directed to use their normal speaking voice, it is far less distracting to the listener than trying to copy what the accent of the character would be.

I think the funniest attempt of an American actor (with a Dutch sounding name), trying to sound Cockney. I'll see if the censor will allow his name to be used: **** Van ****.

Added by edit: Got to feel sorry for him having a name that is usually not allowed to be mentioned anywhere. This might help those who haven't worked it out:

Love the series Vera, but her Geordie accent is way off 😯 This is much funnier to listen to 👍

I find most Australian actors seem to be able to put on a beliveable american or British accent. But in general, I’m not fond of Americans trying different accents - it just never sounds right

Yes, there are a lot of actors who are good with accents, such as Gary Oldman, Christian Bale and David Tennant.

50/50 with me. depending on the actor some are great with accents and some actors not so much

Sean Connery never used anything but his native Scottish accent, even when playing an Italian in Highlander! Didn't do his career any harm. I would sooner that than be distracted by an accent you know isn't their's naturally.

Also Michael Cain, I agree if the accent is wrong you do seem to notice that more than paying attention to the story line. 🙂
