Do You Have a Garage? and Do You Actually Put a Car in It?

Ask a Question

I realised today only two of people in my road actually use their garage for a car. I do not have a garage. I have also noticed for many years, new houses being built without garages. How garages for cars had their day?

The trouble we face is that cars have grown in recent years.

I'm not even sure my latest car could physically fit in the garage, and that's before I even think about removing the accumulated junk.

blacklabrador I agree with you. It is the same with parking spaces, these are not getting bigger but cars are.

Yes, we have a garage. Years ago both cars went in but over the years we have accumulated so much stuff that there’s only room for one car. We gave our old car to a friends son.

I've got a garage and it is full of Amazon boxes as I have a serious issue with buying everything that I think is a deal, fools and their money come to mind.

pato So easy to buy online these days. I have to stop myself and ask do I really need it. Usually the answer is no.

We have a garage, there is a few items in it, but we don't use it for either of our cars. A few of the houses around our development have converted their garage.

My garage is for kids bikes and all the stuff that my wife wants out of the house.

Howmuch Does that include you?! Only joking, but many garages become dumping grounds for stuff we probably won’t use again but can’t throw out.

We have off street parking so there is no need to waste our time putting in and taking out a car.

Garages have mainly been used for storage space as there’s always one hoarder in the house some are converted to chill out areas but unless you have a expensive car most people just park it on the drive or on the street

esaa only one hoarder? I think we’re both guilty of that although my husband always says that might come in handy one day.

esaa my parents have a 2 car garage that only fits one car due to all the other stuff my mum has put in it! She is the hoarder in that house

I think only one of my neighbours puts their car in the garage - and do I admire them ! Everything in the garage has it's place (mostly on wall racks or hooks ) and after using the lawnmower or pressure washer etc back it goes in it's place .

My garage is full of stuff that "may" come in useful one day ? and of course the car remains on the drive .

I've actually noticed in my street of about 30 odd detatched and semis , well over half have extensions where the garage would be /has been .

Often thought about doing the same myself as my garage (lets call it an oversized shed ! ) is in my back garden taking up valuable garden space . Trouble is where would I then put all my accumulated junk ?

I moved from a 2 bed house to a 4 bed detached with a garage, my plan was the car would go in the garage over winter, fast forward 9 years and it's not happened yet 🤣 . I have 2 neighbours that religiously put their cars in the garage which have minimal junk. A couple of neighbours have had them converted and one neighbour has had the garage 3/4 converted so the garage door is still there and a few bikes and mower etc kept at the front, so a bit of storage space kept and the kitchen a bit bigger.

HEDGEHOGS So many uses for a garage. Which is great as gives people a lot of uses for it. I do believe it is hardly used for the purpose it was built for.

I would love a garage but not to put my car in ! I have so much ‘stuff’ in my house that could quite easily be stored in a garage.

reannsgran A garage is great for storage but you can land up storing anything and everything, then you need to have a garage clear out.

Our garage is just full of nonsense.

We do have a drive too though, so easier to park on that.

I did have a garage, but even a moderate car, when inside, you could not open the doors! The garage is now a dining room and car stays on the drive.

Lynibis So many people have done this to gain extra space and I can fully understand it. My mum had a garage at her old house, it was in a block but it was so tight even to get a small car in.

A car on the drive is better for security, it shows someone is home. We've been burgled and it was when both of us were working half nights - no cars meant they had an idea the house was empty.

kricam I completely understand that. We had the problem with a caravan on the drive when we went away without it. We had to block it in with neighbours cars! It looked like we were in and the neighbours were out.

eyeballkerry we ask the same.of.our neighbours when we're both working nights now. Fortunately they have 2 cars so can leave one on our drive but still have one at their own house 👍

kricam with careful parking we can get two cars on our drives round here. Obviously I only have one car but neighbours have two so I asked them to use my drive when I was away and I think they were glad for the ease of parking.

Lynibis yes the neighbours have one car on the street and it can be a tight squeeze because most houses here have 2 or 3 cars. At least for a short time the neighbours car is not at risk of being pranged by passing vehicles
