What's the Best Way to Remove Pictures without Damaging Walls?
Ask a Question
We are moving soon & want to take the pictures off the walls.
We decided to use Gorilla & UniBond No More Nails Double-Sided Tape after we accidentally managed to drill into an electric cable putting the kitchen wall clock up!
Just wondering if anyone has any tips as to make the least damage to the walls & the pictures. I'd be very grateful
I've stopped using nails on walls as some just fall off or are not suitable for it, so instead, drill into the wall (not too deep unnecessarily), hammer a coach screw (+ screw in it a bit), and that's it.
You can use blue tack for posters although the blue glue may eventually dry and the posters fall (damaging it).
For pictures I find command strips great, we've used them in several rooms and they create minimal damage when removed. However they aren't great for heavier objects such as mirrors.
I've recently put up a full length mirror in my daughters room with command strips. I used quite a few large ones, the trick is apply them and the wait an hour before adding any weight so the adhesive bonds to the surface. No nails etc will be far to strong and may damage the wall should you need to reposition the pictures.
Carlton1512 I always use these and although I haven't taken any pictures down they are not meant to leave marks and peel off cleanly long as you do so in correct direction. Instructions are clear and easy.
It appears (unless the opening post has been altered) That the OP is wanting advice on how to remove pictures that have been attached to walls, not how to affix them.
It would usually be necessary to find the appropriate solvent - some soaking would probably be required and a spatula (or similar) to separate when solvent has softened.
davidstockport Thanks David, I haven't altered it, but I think someone else may have changed the question It was my first attempt to ask a question... so expected there to be some problems I am looking for advice/tips on how to get the pictures off the walls after using the above products, was just wondering if anyone could share their experiences
SilverRose That's the way I read it: that you wanted advice on how to remove the pictures, unfortunately the first to respond will give advice on how to affix them (quite the opposite) then others will follow suit. Some members rarely read the actual question, they just read the first reply.
There was nothing wrong with your question.
Things will depend on the substance used to fix the pictures to wall, with some... if you've got an old thin bladed serrated bread knife* it might be possible to saw through the fixing substance. Sometimes any plaster work damaged can be fixed with Polyfilla (that's not a parrot food) or similar.
* A longish hacksaw blade would work too.
