Greedy HMRC Worker Who Stole £300k in Child Benefit is Only Paying Back £1

In the News

And yet another injustice to the taxpayer

This greedy pair told the authorities a lie that their three children were disabled, and submitted false tax credit claims to receive £305,952 in benefit payments from 2015 onwards

Ok she was jailed , she got just over 2 years , so she will be out in a year, but he got a suspended sentence , very lucrative for them both in the end

What made it worse was she worked for the HMRC, so knew how the system worked and how not to get found out , in the end she was rumbled

When it came to claiming some of the stolen money back under the Proceeds of Crime Act she pleaded she had no assets , so the court only asked her for £1 back in total !

He has still to go to court for the same but he knows the same will probably be applied, if not less

They have obviously squirrelled their assets away somewhere safe not to be found

Who says crime does not pay !!

It really should be taken from their state pension. There should never be a situation where crime pays so they should get it back somehow even if it is future benefits.

BonzoBanana She should lose her lucrative white collar pension B, i am not sure they can touch the state pension

But there will be a reason the law cannot demand this , there always is , people like this always get away with it

telmel People who have failed to make full contributions get reduced state pensions so there is a mechanism already in place that reduces state pensions.

BonzoBanana There is B, but i think it only can be reduced from a lack of contributions, ie missing years, i have never heard of someones state pension being rescinded or reduced because of crime, although it should be

In fact i think prisoners still get theirs when incarcerated

I am sure the do gooder lawyers would not allow it

But i have seen the likes of police officers etc in the news that have lost their works pension when they have been sacked from the force

Yes, many people would consider a year in jail would be worth it for 300k. It is sickening especially as her kids are motherless while she is doing porridge.

Lynibis The problem in UK is the law and punishments which are too lenient.

SebK84 I do agree but I feel the penal system needs a total overhaul and I wish some genius would come up with an idea on how to do so.

Leannexxx I get you but people can't survive on fresh air and it's always the children who suffer. Foster care costs a fortune. I am not necessarily talking about this case I just wish there was another way. An isolated island where they are given the tools to be self sufficient and don't get to see any loved ones for the duration?

Lynibis it's a joke how many get away with this tho and it's the genuine people who suffer

Lynibis What are you thinking of saying "her kids are motherless while she is doing porridge"? who cares? I don't! I am so angry that one of their own staff behaved like this.

The problem is the judge not jailing her long enough and her equally repulsive husband getting only a derisive sentence.

Yeah another clear example of why the benefits system is broken, there is genuine people out there who are truly sick and get barely anything

They probably spent it on luxury holidays and dining out, that way they have no assets. No fancy car or jewellery etc to be taken off them and sold but to be asked to pay £1 back is slap in the face for honest people who are out working all hrs they can, sometimes working 2 jobs or working lot of overtime and still struggling to pay bills and give their kids a good life
