Hairstyles Prejudice

Other

Just seen on GMB that those with afro hair are receive prejudice if they have their hair in a more natural style such as afro or in dreads. They spoke with someone who said a boss told them they looked smarter when they wore a wig and got criticised for having a fade.

Now I couldn't care what a person looks like but there's certain jobs that certain looks aren't ok. I. E a mohawk if you are working in finance industry or loose hair when work with food. Regardless of hair type I. E afro or straight flat hair so it doesn't get into food. Having said that to tell a person their hair is not suitable for how it is naturally or when they tye it back and it's in braids or well kept dreads isn't OK either and disrespectful

I was told that I wasn't aloud to go into work with my hair being dark purple and cover my tattoo I laughed and said they did give me the job as the way I looked and I'll be staying like that if they didn't like it they can tell me to leave I wouldn't mind but I was working for the company for 8 months at this point and didn't change my hair only did my roots when needed to be done a few years ago I went for a interview and was told that I wasn't gonna fit in there so I asked why ? Her reply was because of my hair and shoes my hair is now black red hair dye and I had black Dr martens on

I disagree that theirs certain jobs where certain hairstyles aren't appropriate, if the hair doesn't cause any issue with their job then I don't see an issue as long as it's clean etc. Traditionally though you're right, same with tattoos. I think we're moving away from that though, if someone is good at their job it shouldn't matter how they choose to do their hair or what tattoos they have (as long as they're not offensive.)

I remember when I worked at a supermarket about 15 years ago they told me to shave when i was growing a beard. Didn't seem fair.

jms19 when I say certain jobs hairstyles are suitable I'm talking in general I. E. Round food hair needs to be tyed up not loose regardless of it being an afro or straight hair. If anything hair in dreads or braids round food is better as you are less likely to find random bits in food

Not just non white people have this problem. If I weren't a white blonde person you would think I have afro hair and I mean no offence when I say it has been the bain of my life. For about a decade I had a yearly yuko treatment which took hours and cost between £250 and £300 each time. I felt so glam without all the frizzy thickness. As a pensioner I no longer bother and just tie it back. I am sorry but natural hair is not always all it's cracked up to be.

I always had the opposite feeling and talked about it with my African background friends. I found their natural hair 100 times more beautiful than fake wigs.

I’ve always been envious of Afro styles such thick black hair rather than boring straight brown lifeless hair.
