Home Baking

Do any one still do home baking . I still do. Make my own cakes and buns. Flans. Soon I will be baking my Christmas cake. And later will do the mince pie's.. do you still like to do your own baking.
Have to do dozens of mince pies every year, for both daughters in law, boss, sister, granddaughter and 2 or 3 friends. I do a dozen or more a week from beginning of November and freeze them. Love doing cupcakes but daren't make them except as gifts as I live alone and end up pigging out!
Never made cup cakes. It sounds like that you are very bizzsy with all them mince pies to make.
I do, I find it very relaxing - and I think its getting popular again. Currently have 3 citrus drizzle cakes cooling on the side for a cake sale tomorrow. Also like to pound out work frustrations on bread dough!
I've never tryed to make bread yet. Your cakes sound yum yum hope your cake sale goes very well for you. And I hope it's not raining
nicolajaynehend Thank you - hopefully will make a bit of money for charity. Just the smell of homemade bread is the best, recommend you try it - nothing better than hot out the oven with butter and a lump of cheese!
I love making my own cakes. As well as it being fun, you know exactly what goes into them and they're free from preservatives and stuff. Although being free from preservatives does mean that it will go stale quicker. But cake never lasts long in our house anyway.
And I know this isn't really baking, but I also make my own butter. Just get some double cream and keep on whipping it until it turns into butter. When you start getting the buttermilk that it is when you can stop whipping. That remaining buttermilk comes in handy for other recipes.
Thank you ever so much regularcomper90 for sharing the butter recipe. And going to give it a try. I like a good home made fruit cake. But does not last long.
When I go to my local salsa party, its my tradition to make cakes...a small selection below, all handmade by me!
Thank you ever so much in sharing these lovely cakes and buns. This must take you a long time to do these. I love your cup cakes. I've never done cup cakes they look to hard. Your cakes and buns look to good to eat.
I should really put what they are lol
From the top...
Triple chocolate marble cake
Cappuccino marshmallow cake
Courgette & lime cake
Guinness & chocolate cupcakes / Custard cream cupcakes
Gluten free lemon drizzle cake / Blueberry muffins with cinnamon crumble / Jammie dodger marbled red velvet loaf cake
Chocolate orange cupcakes / White chocolate & raspberry
Like the sound of your cappuccino marshmallow cake. Was that a hard cake to do. It sound like it is. Also like the sound of you courgette and lime cake. And also like sound of custard cream cupcakes. All these lovely cake same very hard to do. Do you every make up a cake that you have done. You could have your own cake shop.
nicolajaynehend No, not really. The outside uses a whole jar of that fluff stuff you can buy. You definitely need a sweet tooth for it! They're not difficult to make really...just follow the instructions and you can't go wrong!
I've never made up my own, but I might mix one recipe with another kinda thing...I like to think of unique and different flavours, for example bacon and maple syrup cupcakes, lager and lime, chocolate and chilli...I have done those before with great success!
Like you I like to mix and match flavours. Because it be comes boring . The same cake same flavours. Do like the sound of your bacon and maple syrup cupcakes. Bet they went fast.
Hi agnesfaludi did you make your fruit bread. It sounds lovely. I've never made fruit bread be for.
Well it wouldn't be Good Friday if I didn't knock out a tray of my world famous* Hot Cross Buns
*When I say World Famous I actually mean mildly enjoyed by members of my family.
blacklabrador they do look rather good! Now you're not telling porkie pies are you, unwrapping a few packs and setting out on a tray? Only joking, they look delish.
Lynibis There was a point about 2 hours in when they were going for their 2nd prove that I did think it would be far easier just to buy.
With mine though I add a fair bit of mixed spice, and above normal amounts of mixed fruit, so I think the effort is worth the reward.
blacklabrador ooh wow. I'm very impressed. I've never had much luck with hot cross buns for some reason.
I don't bake, mostly because I would eat it all But I thought with the popularity of the Great British Bake Off that home baking was on the rise. I know during Lockdown lots of people were trying to make sourdough bread
beccatavender same here, I have no willpower but I have just bought yeast and am going to make the effort to master bread making.
Lynibis Good luck, there is nothing nicer than freshly baked bread, the only thing is I would eat the whole loaf
I guess best bit with home baking/cooking is actually knowing exactly what ingredients go into what you eat. Generally with less artificial and preservatives (and potentially healthier if you could stop yourself eating them all in one go!)
We recently bought a bread maker and it does make quite decent bread. It also makes pizza dough, bread roll dough etc. We have tried the pizza dough and put our own toppings on, it was the best we have ever had. We would never buy a shop bought pizza again.
Other than that yes, I bake fruit pies & crumbles, cakes, scones etc. Cheesecake, again I would never buy a cheesecake again!
I think I cook so much because I hate processed foods. I like to buy meat that is still meat, not reconstituted (ready chewed rubbish).
I do. I make birthday and wedding cakes for a liking. But I still bake for ourselves also, like scones, drop scones, tray bakes etc etc x
I really enjoy baking and have done so from a very young age, my Mum was a superb baker and taught me well, today I will be making Millionaires Shortbread for Easter treat.
I bake when I feel like im struggling because I can achieve some positive out of basic ingredients
I've always made my childrens birthday cakes and help with the charity bake sales we do at work
I dont like doing requests for people as it has pressure attached
I love making anything to do with brownies - they are so easy to make and always a hit in our house.
I have always done my own home baking and past this down to my children. So many people can’t see the point and say it is easier and quicker to buy something. It’s not the same and you don’t get the same enjoyment. Definitely get a better taste being homemade.
I’ve just discovered Betty Crocker carrot cake mix and my husband makes the carrot cake because I hate grating the carrots, it’s fool proof and tastes homemade.
