What is the Impact of the Asian Hornet on Local Bee Populations?
In the News
Our supply of honey is in danger of running out due to the invasion of the Asian hornet
They first appeared in 2004 in France when they arrived there on a shipment from Asia
and then started to spread across Europe, now they are established in the UK
They are very aggressive and can eat up to 50 honey bees a day , destroying the bee population
So i would not worry about that bee in your bonnet, more the hornet in your hive

I’ve come across these in europe a few times and they are pretty big and certainly best avoided
I'm more worried about the Asian Giant Hornet coming to our shores. Those things are huge and given the name Murder Hornets. I'm someone with an aggressive immune system so over-reacts a bit to stings etc. I don't like to kill animals but if there was Asian hornets nearby I would definitely volunteer to kill the nests (with suitable protective clothes). We all need to be on the watch out for them. There is enough people on this island to make sure they don't get a foothold.
BonzoBanana Its really worrying B if you are more allergic to their stings than normal , i have heard of people reacting very badly to a normal bee sting, never mind one of these, they are like mosquitos, you wonder what their purpose is in life when all they do is cause misery
telmel I guess its another predator species but unfortunately very successful and by killing bees it jeopardises the success of many plants which require bees to help them pollinate. I'm not sure I've been stung by a bee but have been stung by hornets in the past. Bees are fairly reluctant to sting I think compared to wasps in my experience. I remember a bee landing on my cuff and I was fairly near to some flowers so carefully moved over to the flowers for the bee to move off my cuff which it did onto the flowers. I reckon if that had been a wasp it would have just stung me.
