How Many Hours Have You Gone without Sleep ?

In the News

This article is about people who have deliberately gone without sleep to break a record

This man from the US went without sleep for 11 days in 1963 and suffered insomnia for the rest of his life

In another article another person from Cornwall called Tony Wright did the same, 11 days without sleepnig, ,he said he reached another unexplained level in his brain he had not experienced before but suffered no long term effects

The world record for no sleep was set by Robert McDonald in 1986 ,18 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes

But the Guiness Book of Records is no longer accepting this challenge due to the detrimental effect on peoples health

How long have you managed to go without sleep ?

I don't think I've done longer than two days. But it's not been through choice I get insomnia and spend the whole time being tired and wanting to sleep.

Midnightflower I know so many people with insomnia M , it could be through worry and what is happening around us at the moment

telmel I wish I knew. I've had it for over 20 years and can deal with it better than I use to but it is so annoying. Especially when my partner falls asleep as soon as he shuts his eyes!

martinlufc5637 Thats terrible M , i am amazed you manage on so little sleep

I remember reading Margaret Thatcher only needed four hours sleep a night to function , more than you , and she ran a country, although i use that term loosely 😉

Nothing worse than gallbladder pain. You think you are going to die.

As for how long I’ve gone without sleep for it’s 36 hours.

I think mine has been about 50 hours! I felt so sick afterwards. 18 days and 21 hours sounds insane- and no long term damage is really lucky. I am glad the Guinness world record don’t accept it any more as some people nowadays lack brain cells as it is. 🤣

have gone up to 2 days before but it was hell - again as with others above, due to sickness. In terms of my usual sleep pattern I usually get about 5 hours max a night - and thats often interrupted mid way through. between about 2am and 7am although I occasionally will lie in until 8am!

Night is for sleep & its a blessing one shouldn't take it for granted thats why nights are bit colder so one can rest & relax without any reason one shouldn't do things to harm themselves just for stupid records or entertainment

After 24hrs I start to feel like I've taken amphetamines, I'm totally hyper. It's not good. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often

27 hours all of it sitting with MIL who fell and broke her leg. 9 hours for 1st ambulance + 3 for next + 14 in A&E then home/cup of tea/bed. She then phoned after an hour to say they'd moved her to a ward + 1 hour and she phoned again - I give up on sleep after that.

I also suffer with insomnia so have nights of no sleep and also nights of very distrubed sleep, I call it my cat naps, I've been like this for quite a few years now and guess i've just got used to it. Would love to go to bed and wake up after a good 8 hours sleep, that would be bliss.
