iPhone 15 Expected to Have a USB-C Port
In the News
Kind of exciting news even though I'm not an Apple user.
Now, here's what's so not good: Apple will probably released their own proprietary USB-C cable to charge at full speed while the others will be slower in comparison.
If you're gonna spend £1500 or whatever it costs it better come with that dang premium cable and a USB wall charger as well.
The standard models don't look amazing to me. The sort of technology you would get on a android phone for maybe half the price or maybe 1/3rd of the price. I recently bought a Redmi Note 10 Pro from cashconverters for £80. That has a 120Hz AMOLED screen and a higher definition camera in spec its not far from these Apple phones. A bit better in places a bit worse in others. While I only paid £80 for it, it was sold for less than £200 new at launch from the cheaper suppliers about 2 years ago. While my phone may not match the latest flagship Android phones its competitive with the Apple offerings nowadays to a much greater extent. Even the Pro model is weaker in some areas.
BonzoBanana there's literally nothing the redmi note 10 does better than a recent iPhone Pro max. Side by side hardware isn't the only thing you want to look at, and even looking at hardware, the redmi note 10 pro falls way short. The CPU is a mid/low end snapdragon chip (732), three generations old. It wasn't particularly great when it came out, it will certainly doesn't stand up against Apple chips (now or when it was released). Same can be said for GPU chip. You won't be playing any modern, demanding mobile games on that Kryo 470, at least not with ease. 64GB storage is simply not viable for most people now. You could fill that with ten apps, and half of it is already going to be used up by the Xiaomi bloatware that comes on the phone.
The camera hardware is decent enough, but it's made somewhat redundant by awful camera software, lack of point and shoot capability. The best end result from phone caneras all come from Pixel, Galaxy and iPhone.
The redmi note 10 pro doesn't even support 5G bands. It's already dated now, hence the lack of value in the second hand market.
The screen is nice. If all you use it for is watching YouTube videos and streaming services, £80 is a great price.
What you actually want to look at is benchmarks.
Redmi note 10 pro CPU vs iPhone 13 CPU

The iPhone (predictably) absolutely smashes the Redmi in all aspects of performance.
This is coming from an android user who has never owned an iPhone, and my last two phones were Xiaomi - writing this on a 10t pro.
Of course you pay a premium with apple, and they are overpriced. But they are also best in class in terms of actual performance. The latest iPhone simply isn't even comparable to a three year old mid tier xaomi.
All that being said, most people don't 'need' the performance offered by big flagships such as iPhone Pro max and Galaxy ultra. They buy then to watch tik tok and scroll social media, which is senseless. Or even just as a status symbol, also silly.
Cheap Chinese phones do present decent price vs performance, that's why I have one. But that top shelf hardware does not translate into top shelf performance, because of buggy software, bloated OS, and poor resource management.
FearLoathing I don't believe the camera setup on recent iphones is that great I've seen various photographic sites criticise them as falling well behind. A recent iphone made use of two lower resolution sensors to create a fake higher resolution which was not a true high resolution image.
I'm not really keen on iphone gaming, there is a lot less free content and you don't get the open source games like android its much more closed. I wouldn't even consider a iphone for gaming myself.
My phone has a 120Hz refresh rate which I think is only on the pro iphone model, not sure. I can also plug in headphones and use a micro-sd card to add a lot more storage. There are lots of points about my phone which I much prefer over iphone but yes of course it's slower than the latest chipsets but still capable of running anything I've found. The slower CPU and GPU setup is definitely the weaker aspect of my phone but in other areas I'm not really seeing much advantage at all and I'm not finding the processing power of my phone a weakness in the real world.
I thought in europe they had to do this as they were forced by the court with this new phone. It’s better for everyone this way, so annoying needing a charger specifically for apple products
jms19 My niece has an iPhone (one of the newer, can't really tell the difference) and she asked me if I had a cable to charge the phone which I did (hers stopped working).
You know, I thought the port was a USB-C, but it's a Lightning port instead.
It does look very similar and that confused me for a second. Good thing Apple is finally going to stop using proprietary cables/ports.
PhilipMarc yeah i think they passed the ruling for environmental reasons. A lot of plastic used in having different chargers for different things
It has been confirmed:
That's great of course, but for me iPhones are too restrictive and overpriced. I'm happy with my Android devices.
I’m still using an iPhone 6s and I will still need a lightning charger. Hope they don’t stop them or might have to consider leaving apple.
JLouM Buy a braided cable and it should last you for a very long time whereas flimsy plastic cables tend to break easily.
They're really cheap on AliExpress (no complaints as they're generally great), but of course it takes about 2 weeks to arrive.
