Italian Restaurant Charges Outrageous Fee to Slice Birthday Cake

Ask a Question

A restaurant in Italy charged £17 to slice a birthday cake the customer had brought there, despite them spending £103.49 on pizza, wine, beer and water

Talk about a lack of customer service

I have never seen this happen here, in fact i have been to some restaurant chains where they not only cut the cake, but give you one free sometimes , and sing happy birthday to you

I think one time was at TGI Fridays , but many years ago, i am not sure if they still do it there

Which restaurants do you know that go the extra mile ?

That’s ridiculous 😱 for slicing a mere cake 🍰 they bought themselves?!! And not to mention the cost of just eating pizza 🍕 drinking wine 🍷 beer 🍺 that’s really expensive!!

You could make your own pizza or buy the foods from most supermarkets lol 😝 saving a lot of money!

kitty88uk Its like that saying K, you can't have your cake and eat it, unless you pay to have it sliced 😀

telmel I would too! 😠

But you would never see me go out to eat! Lol these days it’s a rip off!

Spending that amount of money you can buy a lot of groceries and or use the money to pay bills

There were twenty guests, so pretty cheap birthday meal for so many. If you read the article the restaurant charged 86p per guest to serve the cake. I’m sure their deserts would have been more than 86p.

Pjran I suppose it is not bad if you look at it that way P , but now it is in the newspaper it puts the restaurant in a bad light , it would have been better to cut the cake for free

telmel I reckon the restaurant will get more trade for food and drinks costing that for a party of 20.

Tipping is not something people do around European countries, but that looks like a tipping charge with a different name.

No way is slicing pizzas that expensive, that's just ridiculous.

Even £1.73 is also a ripoff just to cut a sandwich in half. Same goes for an empty plate costing £1.70.

Not a good look for Italy, that's for sure. I went to Italy, Venice around 2019 and I didn't really like it, just too many people everywhere and a grocery store I entered wouldn't allow me to leave if I didn't scan a receipt (I had to wait for someone who actually bought something).

That stupid "scan a receipt to open the gates" is unfortunately starting to spread to other countries.

PhilipMarc They even charge you a tax now to go to Venice P , they are not happy so many tourists go there every year and are actually trying to discourage too much tourism

Plus it stinks there now with the excessive heat

telmel I've no plans of ever going there again.

I do wish my parents had taken me there in the 90's when I was little.

The magic is gone.

PhilipMarc Gosh I had better be careful in future as I often go in a store to browse without ending up buying anything, especially if they haven't got what I want.

Lynibis Sainsbury's is apparently doing it. 😬

This video is from 2022:

If I see the receipt checker, I'm not buying there. 😡

Find a nearby small pond and get your whole family to defecate in it and then come back 3 or 4 days later and you can experience the aroma of Venice for free. A good money saving tip for a site like Latestdeals.

I don’t see what the issue is, the guests got a canny deal. Asking a restaurant to use all there facilities and service to serve food they brought themselves and not pay a charge is cheeky.

To be honest I would be a bit miffed if a group of 20 brought in their own cake and expected me to serve unless it had been pre-arranged. Surely the restaurant would have supplied a cake which would have cost less than what the customers paid for the cake and the cutting of it separately.

I was more incensed by the rest of the story where someone was charged £1.70 for cutting a sandwich in half!

I have had this abroad a lot mainly in Lanzarote where if it is your birthday they will play and sing happy birthday plus give you a small dessert. It makes you go back.

eyeballkerry Exactly E, its called customer relations, a good restaurant will realise this and not charge , otherwise it can alienate the customer from returning

I'm surprised the pizza and alcohol was so cheap, it cost nearly £80 for my other half and me, decent restaurant 🙂 ....maybe there was some language barrier, restaurants are busy and they may have been pre booked, some kind of extra service charge x
