Should We as a Nation Pay so Many Royals?

Ask a Question

I read that as of June 2022 show that they cost the taxpayer £102.4m to the royal family. I think it’s about time our nation reduces those royals who are on the payroll and that money should go to the NHS and education.

Do you think I’m being harsh?

I am not against slimming down the family but we must remember that they do actually work for their money. Quite hard actually, I would hate to be on such a heavy schedule, especially after retirement age. They reportedly bring in more than they cost but I suppose that's debateable. If they lived ordinary lives like us no one would want them to do what they do as they would lose their celebrity status. Far less worthy politicians, celebs etc get paid thousands upon thousands just for making after dinner speeches.

Lynibis surely it’s time to cut their costs. The royals received further criticism for spending £1 million on refurbishing the home of Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. The Duke is classed as a ‘working royal’ because he attends more than 100 events on the Queen's behalf. But this hardly warrants a seven-figure refurbishment courtesy of the taxpayer.

Pjran I must admit I am biased because I am a self confessed royalist, mainly from my in depth studies of the monarchy since William the Conqueror. I doubt any of them have truly deserved their life of privilege but I do believe our heritage and future history would be the poorer without them.

Lots of them are rich in their own right and I feel they should pay their own household and domestic bills.

Lynibis Absolutely they should pay, after all they’re raking in lots from their estates and own businesses.

The Royals in fairness do bring into the UK economy considerably more than is spent on them , they also support a large number of charities and military bodies , you really need to consider the bigger overall picture not just one point in isolation

Mango4 that’s their job and a healthy salary to go with it. It’s not the heir but the hangers on I wish should be cut.

Pjran Of course it's their job, but if you cut them out of the equation , then the contribution to the economy will suffer so will the benefits to the charities.

Whether you just don't like them , or are jealous of them it matters little . I certainly wouldn't want the job that comes with birth (or marriage ) . Imagine having absolutely no time to yourself - EVER ! Every day , every week is planned for your duties and you have zero say in it 😒.

On the purely economics side the sums have been done many times as to how much the Royal Family "costs " the tax payer ( I actually thought it was nearer a billion a year ) . But it has always been found that the Royal Family benefit our economy by far more than that in tourism , trade etc .

OK have a whinge if you are a republican but do your sums first ?

I’m not whinging nor is it a case of being a republican. It’s merely those who benefit are not in close line to the throne.

The royal family have been around for more than 400 years! It is only recently the present monarchy have bowed to a minority of critics to reduce their expenses.

I always thought King Charles had planned to cut Royal costs once he came to the thrown. They have to keep the public onside or they will find surport dwindling, so I think they are more conscious of their status than in previous years.

The hanger ones should be cut. The likes of Edward and Anne who work hard, not in your face about being royalty deserve to stay. Andrew needs to be binned off. Think Charles is distancing himself from Harry due to the way he is behaving
