Have You Had NHS Treatment Cancelled or Pushed Back?

Ask a Question

Have you had any treatment or appointments cancelled or pushed back because of strike action?

Rishi Sunak is blaming long NHS waitilng lists (that have hit a record high) on nurses and doctors going on strike.

Can’t really pay much attention to what Rishi says imo, the other week he was in an interview trying to say they have cut the waiting times and when he was given stats to prove that’s entirely false he just tried to waffle his way out of it.

Nurses and doctors going on strike would and will lengthen waiting lists.

I have been lucky and only had one appointment cancelled.

TheChimp I'm behind the likes of Dr's and nurses. I work in education it's all about cuts and making the lives of those that are vulnerable hell. Even if you don't class yourself as vulnerable on paper you maybe classed as that. people are leaving cos pay is rubbish. Nurses, drss teachers, support staff, cleaners work hard to make sure our kids, sick, elderly, whichever group you fall into is supported/looked after/cared for and we don't want to fail you guys by saying you're in the wrong post code or your sen child can't have the one to one needed be cause we've no money or you have to wait 2 years to see a camhs or cancer specialist

Jerseydrew So you think that junior doctors should get a 35% pay increase as demanded by the union?

Mum’s been waiting 2 and a half years for ear, nose and throat referral. She was texted asking do you still want to be on list? I replied yes for her on her phone and still haven’t heard a thing since. That was about 4 months ago.

paullittler60 I think people do realise this. It’s the government though I expect not all doctors get paid the same. A lot are going to Australia for better work life but how many do they need over there?

NHS Choices (Choose & Book) means you can choose which hospital you go to. Find out what the waiting lists are like at your local hospitals (particularly private hospitals that have an NHS contract) and ask your GP to refer you accordingly as you may well be seen sooner.

Its more than long waiting lists, its a breakdownof the NHS system- nurses are pushed to their limits regardless of whether there are strikeson or not- i have witnessed this myself during a three week stay in hospital- of course there are long waiting lists but that is because of the population explosion particularly in the south east, were no extra doctors' surgeries have been built, no extra health facilities built- but we are still struggling with things as they were before all the new builds. Its a case of lack of joined up planning - joined up planning with the roads people, withthe local hospitals, local schools...its heading towards melt down. Don't over simplify things Mr Rishi Sunak...look at the BIG picture

smartie67 Yes I agree that there are so many new housing estates being built and becoming more populated but no facilities are being provided despite promises just to get their planning through for profit. Obviously has consequences.

I am still waiting for a scan after 6 months - I am taking comfort from that - they obviously aren't looking for anything too troublesome

There has been lack of investment since the current goverment being in power. The NHS is slowly but surely being privitised and I believe that the people of this country do not want that to happen. All they want is for the NHS being able to deal with all patients within an appropite time line

I am very fortunate and have nothing cancelled or postponed. Sadly i have quite a few issues that involve medical intervention.

The doctors etc going on strike wouldn’t help the situation the NHS was already in .

my family has been waiting years for my daughters ASD assessment and still another two years on waiting list . I’m now Gofunding for cash to go private .

I have had appointments repeatedly cancelled as I unfortunately have issues covering two different consultants, they have had to cover junior doctors in A&E or there weren’t the nurses to assist. They’ve been honest and told me the reason each time. It doesn’t help when they only run a couple of clinics a month 4/5 cancellations and a years gone by. Things are now moving and I had a colonoscopy last Saturday and have another ultrasound in a couple of weeks ironically one of the nurses who was asking me about my job and how many hours I worked (I now wfh due the worsening of my bowels and the constant pain with them and my endometriosis) they were being paid overtime due to the Saturdays playing catch up. I felt it was a win for them rather than me.

I wouldn’t say the cancelled or postponed appointments in our household have had anything to do with strikes. It’s just how the whole system has changed since Covid.

eyeballkerry covid, or more specifically, our govsrnment response to covid, has certainly had an impact. But the NHS has been failing since long before the pandemic.

I'm on a waiting list to get my lung capacity assessed as I was badly effected by Covid and my lungs were quite damaged by my own immune system very bluntly trying to rid my body of Covid. I'm not a high priority patient as it's really just to see how much lung capacity has returned so I guess I keep getting pushed back. A recent letter asked me if I wanted to remain on the waiting list which I did so had to reply. Obviously strikes will massively add to waiting lists I really wish people's viewpoints weren't so politicised. We are becoming a much poorer country with much greater debts and the NHS will have to reduce its services over time as we become poorer. People still send huge amounts of money abroad buying imported goods or going on foreign holidays which means the government has to borrow back this sterling and we all have to pay the interest on these debts. Yes politicians are incompetent but we also as consumers have to take the blame for our actions too which has damaged the economy so much.

I've been waiting 3 years for 1 procedure and 2 for another. I get the appointments then they cancel them the week before. I don't know why. I have found that a lot of surgeons are taking on more private work and believe that's why some nhs waiting lists are so long

My old man has lymph node cancer. He was told he would get the results in two weeks after his scan. He ended up waiting six weeks to hear, and it turned out his doctor had the results for at least ten days before he was told. Now he has to wait a further three weeks for more scans to determine the best course of treatment. No doubt he will be waiting much longer for the scans. Then he will be put on a backlogged waiting list for surgery/treatment.

People are dying as a result of not getting the examinations and treatment they need in a reasonable time frame. The NHS is broken beyond fixing. The entire system needs a complete overhaul, it's no longer working. We have a higher infant mortality rate than Cuba - a third world, communist country where doctors earn less than taxi drivers. We have lower cancer survival rates than a lot of the developing world.

We should adopt a system that actually works, like the rest of the world. People here worship the NHS as if it's some sort of diety. It's actually complete garbage. It should be partly subsidised, but high earners and non UK residents should have to pay, or go private.

Most people with a large disposable income just have health insurance now anyway, because it's simply not viable to use the NHS any more.

I'm on a waiting list for an examination. It's non emergency, the wait list is 18 months. If it was emergency, the wait list would be 9 months. 9 months waiting for something deemed to be an emergency. It's an absolute joke.
