Outbreak of Lung Injury Associated with the Use of E-Cigarette Vaping Products
In the News
Now the harmful effects of vaping are starting to filter through, so to speak
A lung condition known as Evali is said to be caused by vaping and is found to be linked with vitamin E acetate that is in vaping products
I have always said that the effects of vaping are in the early stages and more conditions will come to light in the future
Making them flavoured is just masking how harmful they really are, the same as fruit flavoured alcopops
I can see stricter control on the sale of them coming soon after this

I'll just keep on my cigarettes.
I like a good puff in the morning, mid-day and the evening
I'll probably die of cancer, but I do enjoy a smoke.
I tried vaping, but it didn't work for me.
POPCORN LUNG
Jerseydrew Totally agree with you, I have said this all along. No tests have ever shown what the short or long term effects are but when you put this stuff into your system it’s never going to be good.
eyeballkerry It took hundreds of years to realise the harm cigarettes does to you but now because of technology at least the scientists can diagnose problems earlier and help save peoples lives
This was a foregone conclusion wasn't it? How they ever got on the market in the first place is a mystery to me.
Hahaha just the market? The NHS are handing them out like no tomorrow saying it's better than smoking
Leannexxx same here, my midwife actually told me to use a vape while pregnant. I've never gone back to cigarettes but stuck on the vape now.
Kids are using them just as something to do now but when I started vaping it was to stop smoking the cigarettes.
Yeah that's true it's because a fashion for kids to use I've tried them but there just not for me
I tired them to and was very ill because of the nicotine Rush from the patches if they want people to stop smoking simply stop selling them but they won't because government makes to much money from them
That's the problem L , the profit they make in taxes from cigarettes , the same with alcohol
I tried vaping when I was pregnant with my son but never got on with it. I've never understood how they could say it is much better from for you when your still inhaling a substance into your lungs. With no real knowledge of whats in it, depending where you buy it from.
Midnightflower If you think about it M , humans are 'designed' to breathe in air through the lungs not vapour or smoke , and as you say it is not just vapour they contain but many chemicals that could harm us that we are just being made aware of
And it is not just these chemicals, add in the mix car emissions, including brake dust , household products, pollen, etc etc and i don't think even the scientists can work out what effects the whole concoction will cause
telmel I've always found it strange that doctors recommend it over smoking when surely quitting should be the only option. I can't understand how it's any better.
Your certainly right about all the other pollutants, when we were kids visiting London we could tell we were near because of the smell!
Midnightflower I remember a few years ago when visiting i went on the underground, when i got to my station i felt a cough coming on and just saw black soot in my handkerchief
Midnightflower I don't think doctors actually recommend it as such... it's just that they consider it as the lesser of two evils.
I agree though that quitting is the only real option, any form of nicotine replacement feeds the addiction to nicotine. (keeping the addiction alive).
Lots of kids are vaping but I suppose that’s no different to when I was a teenager with smoking. The government need to slap a big tax on it to help treat those affected.
Pjran People who visit NHS website and see this page they'll think vaping is perfectly safe and fine: www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/using-e-cigarettes-to-stop-smoking/
NHS has lost its credibility, imo.
PhilipMarc Only those with a very poor understanding of the English language would think that "Also known as vapes or e-cigs, they're far less harmful than cigarettes" means they're harmless. (or perfectly safe).
The fact the article uses "far less harmful" and not "harmless" or "perfectly safe" implies there are some known dangers. But not considered as great as the known dangers of smoking.
There is a vast difference between "small puff vaping " as I do which has successfully removed my smoking addiction . Against doing an imitation of a steam train !
Used as a "dummy " in effect is fine - sadly the idiotic youth , take it to extremes and vape solely to produce a ridiculous vape cloud
Is it clever ? No - is it sensible -obviously not - But until sensible adults let the mindless youth know the error of their ways what is going to change ?
Golfforall Correction: smoking is actually a habit not an addiction, the addiction you speak of (to nicotine) is still alive and kicking... being kept alive by you obtaining nicotine from another source.
Let me see if NHS still has a certain page up...
www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/using-e-cigarettes-to-stop-smoking/
Yep, it is.
telmel Yeah, who knows.
While I'd never trust Pfizer (now), this video uploaded on their channel makes very good points about vaping and despite being from seven years ago, it's more relevant now than ever before!
PhilipMarc Yep that certain page is still up - second time you've linked to it. And it is exactly the same as the first time. It is the page where they "DO NOT" say it is "Perfectly Safe" (as you said)
They actually say it is "Far less harmful". I suggest you try to find someone who can explain that "far less harmful" does not mean the same as "Perfectly Safe",
My dad used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day and over time his lung function dropped to around 40% and was constantly using his inhalers so he decided to give up cigarettes and use a vape. He now has increased his lung function up to 80% and never needs to use his inhalers so they can’t be worse than cigarettes in my opinion
TracyStorrie At the present moment in time no one is saying vaping is worse than vaping. They're saying that vaping is less harmful than smoking.
They're probably correct - but unfortunately many are taking that to mean that vaping is actually safe.
In your dad's case vaping is probably better than smoking - but better still would have been to stop polluting lungs and blood stream with other toxins completely.
Incidentally ignore comments and links to an NHS site that allegedly say vaping is harmless. Although if you do check the link (now posted twice) you'll find the NHS say no such thing.
Its not just about lung capacity T, its the chemicals in the vapes that nobody knows the full effects of, such as the one in the article
These are likely to cause cancers and other diseases , so until further research is carried out they are not safe
Besides a lot of them are imported from the likes of China , i would go as far as to say most, and who knows what they add to the liquids
They don't care about health and safety, you only have to hear about the amount of lead found in some childrens toys, who when they are toddlers are touching and putting them in their mouths
Jerseydrew Funding for the stop to swap scheme – estimated by officials to cost around £45 million over two years – will come from the Department of Health and Social Care’s budget
They will need 10 fold that amount , if not more in coming years in compensation when people are bringing a class action against the health authorities for illnesses found to be caused by vaping, especially if affecting pregnant women
When vaping first came about I know people were trying to do inside. I had rows with kids at work cos it was a vape and told them it was still smoking and we didn't know the effects. Got the teen attitudes one was not amused that my boss backed me over her
Jerseydrew I am afraid teens will rarely listen to sense J, i suppose i was the same when younger, although i have never smoked , but have had my mad moments
We can only hope any harm done by vaping can be reversed or at least treated in the future, but it will undoubtedly be another great expense to burden the NHS with
telmel yeah I nag my son to quit telling him how harmful to his health it is but I'm simply meet with the statement that's for future me to worry about
